I’m not familiar with the TD5 engine, but on a lot of engines you can get a kit to suck oil out via the dipstick tube. In general this involves the insertion of a tube into the dipstick tube and a vacuum pump, the cheaper ones being like a big hand operated syringe.
I would never drain an engine that way, however to remove an amount of overfill oil it’s an option if that can be done with a TD5, noting you don’t want the suction tube getting stuck or breaking !

So after installing a new drain plug in I attempted to remove the oil filter. I didn't know there was a special tool for this so tried all sorts of things, including a chain strap which just ended up punching a hole in the side of the filter. So I brought it to a Land Rover specialist and he had the special tool and was able to remove the old filter and install a new one. Note to self to get special tool.

My problem now is that he over filled the engine by about a litre or so of oil. Is there a way of extracting a litre of oil without having to take the plug out the bottom? I would just like to avoid the mess but if that is the only way so be it. I thought I would ask the collective before proceeding. Thanks again.

It messy but loosen the drain plug and let it spill out over your hand into a catch basin. Don’t let the plug all the way out just hold it and then screw it back in. 🤷‍♂️. (BTW which LR “specialist” here in Ontario did that??)

So a final follow up. I found a plastic tube that would fit down the dipstick tube. I marked the tube to just below the fill mark on the dipstick, inserted the tube and sucked up the oil to create a gravity drip. The hole was pretty small so it took 21hrs to extract 1.4 litres of oil from the engine. It's been rainy so I had the time. I just set it up and left the garage. I could have used a vacuum pump but the hole was so small it would have still taken a few hours of sitting there pumping. It's now less than a mm above the full mark so I'll leave it. I could probably extract another 100ml. Tomorrow it will be dry so a good day for a drive. This is by far the longest it has ever taken me to complete an oil change, start to finish. 2006 90 originally registered in Italy
