Some interesting info here
I’m going through this debate now having been used to a d300 d5 A great spec is available only in d250 with my options as standard or I can spec a d300 to the same and it’s about £10k more It’s hard… |

l have the 90 D250 and have never used full throttle in 8,000 miles, even when towing the caravan. And l don't hang about, l like to keep up with traffic and not cause an obstruction.
l tried the kickdown (full throttle) once, pulling out of a junction (not towing) and from a standing start there's a delay before it responds. |

The delay was horrible on the 240, sounds like it is just as bad. I think it is the diesels although I've not driven a modern petrol Defender. But the older TDV6 suffered this too.
As for full throttle, that has to depend. I frequently use full throttle, be it a 100hp or well over 300hp. |

I drive my D250 pretty hard, particularly across Europe and it flies. Kickdown is quick, no lag and gives the car a good punch. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

I have had a lot of Defender Loaners over the past 6 months some D250 and some D300. I haven't owned an LR with less than 300PS for some time. The D250 had noticeably less poke to me when i got in it BUT after about 500 miles of driving i didn't think there was much in it. I guess i naturally adapted to it. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

I think the thing to bear in mind is. That while 'modern cars' as a whole have gotten faster. The vast majority on the roads are not fast cars, probably averaging 0-60mph in 10-14 seconds or slower if you include vans and the like. And most are probably not driven quickly either.
It really wasn't that long ago that the fastest Land Rover product could barely break 10 secs 0-60mph with less hp than anything on sale today. Today even the "slow" models are pretty quick and would likely show hot hatches of yesterday a clean pair of heels when you put your foot down. |

You can always get the 250 mapped to 300 if you want the extra 50bhp and a bit more torque.
LR Developments claim to use the same software as Land Rover and it's not detected if the vehicle goes back to the dealer. l don't know what they charge but it's likely to be less than 1/10th the cost of ordering D300 over the D250 from Land Rover. |

By way of an update having started this thread, today we finally picked up our Defender. A new to us ‘22 plate P400, so neither a 300 or a 250! Apologies for the switch to all those advocates of either D model, and thank you so much to all those who helped with my original question. Very pleased with it so far, and great service from Sinclair JLR in Ludlow.

Does the P400 not have EGR? As it would be there for the same reason, an inert gas to reduce peak combustion temps to reduce Nox emissions. Certainly other petrol engines have EGR valves, although depending on the cam profile, it is possible to have a degree of 'internal' egr too.
