That’s very saddening.... and looks from the pictures of the stump that it was done by someone that knows what they are doing with a powerful chainsaw with a large bar and sharp chain. Not a random act of vandalism from what I can see.

The weird thing is i can’t see any chips / sawdust, I would have expected to see quite a lot.

Thats sad and very weird. Saying they suspect it was deliberately felled is stating the bleeding obvious. You're not going to get through that trunk with a cheap B&Q McAllister saw either, someone went prepared. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

What a meaningless act. I can only think that the suspect has done it for the kick of the media attention . . . Charlie

That is mental, and very sad indeed. It was a beautiful tree.

It is curious that there appears to be a paint mark on the tree where it was subsequently cut. Not knowing the locality I don't know how hard it is to get there with a saw, it looks pretty remote. It looks reasonably professional, which makes it stranger.

The BBC wrote:
In the past people have been known to leave decorated memorial pebbles by the tree.

I know this may be controversial, but I would also consider this to be vandalism or littering. Leaving anything other than footprints is unacceptable and selfish. (I wouldn't go so far as to fell the tree to stop it though).

Its relatively accessible and can be seen from the main road. Although if you drove a across to it you'd be noticeable

What a shame, what sort of moron does that? Even if I was being paid to do it, I'd refuse, out of principal. There are too many tress being cut down.

I would doubt it was 'an act of vandalism', there is probably an ulterior motive, someone having a dispute or proving his right.

Like the fire on the leaning pub thing. Accidental fire and then accidentally knocked down.. sure..

^^ I'm inclined to agree with you. Someone wanted it gone and knew that this was the only way.

I look forward to seeing who is charged and with what. It wasn't a random act of violence and it should be relatively easy to find out who is behind it.

National Park Authority said it "had reason to believe" the "iconic North East landmark" had been "deliberately felled" That must have taken some working out.

I really cannot understand the motive for this, there is always a reason for everything but what this reason can be in this instance beggars belief. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Why Why Why!

He is clearly handy with a chainsaw, he should be made to come back and cut up the rest, split them, season them and deliver them to all the elderly on his push bike (as clearly he cant drive)

Then pay and plant a replacement, make that 2 for good measure!
