Malta 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Santorini Black
The problem I see with the socket hex is that the tightening (or should say loosening) torque with an 8mm allen key/bit is lower than what is possible with a 17mm socket - for an M10 bolt. That of course is if the bolt seizes in place, but perfectly ok if the necessary precaution is taken during assembly. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Fitted properly there is no reason why they should seize. The only ones I have encountered which have seized have done so because the hole has been filled with thread lock and gasket compound, neither of which are necessary. Even if using genuine preloaded bolts and genuine gaskets and fitting them correctly, they are extremely unlikely to seize.

If they do you can have the delightful learning experience of drilling them out with a left-hand drill ! Rolling with laughter

You can use BZP, just as you can with hex, but there's no real need.


My question regarding longevity is more thinking if the internal faces of the socket head suffer from corrosion and affect using an allen key. Obviously cleaning up a rusty hex head is a case of using a wire brush where that would be more difficult with a cap head.

Thanks for the advice. It has had new wheels recently but I had noticed some evidence of oil/grease on the old wheels.
I'll clean it up and tighten the bolts. Whats suggested nm for these?

I've never had a problem with SHC, but I usually put a blob of grease in the socket, or paint them.

Thanks @ I like old skool for your suggestion.

Checked the flange bolts today and some were indeed loose. One side looser than other, which had more oil streaks on so made sense. Cleaned up and test drove, spotless on return, so thanks for that tip. Thumbs Up
