I wonder if it was a Deluxe model. My father sold a green deluxe to a teacher locally. He was head of a school in Bridport 8 miles away from Beaminster!

Various members of my immediate family had a succession of 99s and 900, starting from a 1972 99 (a very early 2L), including a rather nice 900Turbo. Great cars, all of them.

Love this. My grandfather had a 96 when I was a kid. I then had a succession of SAABs including a 95 with the freewheel gear and 2 99s , one of which had the old 1850 engine that I replaced with the 2.0l, my first real car project when I was a student in the late 80's
My stepmother also had two 900s including a turbo that rally flew! My last SAAB was a 9-5 Aero estate that had been tuned to 350hp with bigger IC, turbo and other bits along with upgraded brakes and suspension. It's one car I regret selling. It was bonkers quick with stunning mid range acceleration but just as home as a family wagon. I sold it to Abbot Racing. So sad SAAB disappeared. I love that they were never main stream and had the quirky centre ignition key. Looking forward to how this turns out. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy. |

Great posts guys, interesting.
SAAB.COM SAAB are still going strong of course still making supersonic jets, submarines, destroyers, ground combat gear, and electronics which has always been their mainstay. Sadly the car division folded ultimately because the cars from the 99 onwards didn,t make a profit. Over engineered you could say, quality in each area too much for the production of cars. There ethos was also that production should be centred around the well being of the worker, so the cars were finished off very labour intensively by hand with the car parked for ages instead of being on a production line in the 99 era... Lancia, Renault etc and SAAB went in to share the costs of producing the same monocoque. SAAB pulled out shocked at the low standards and poor design of Lancia in particular . You still see the SAAB 9000 on the roads today and are sought after, especially for the engine but when was the last time you saw a Renault 25, Lancia etc with the same body! It's no good if you are not making enough money out of it however, even with Scanias backing... who pulled out eventually. |

GMs ownership was never going to end well for SAAB - vastly different cultures and visions of what a car should be.
If I am not mistaken, at one point the shareholders of Koenigsegg were in talks to rescue / resurrect the car side of SAAB but that came to nothing. Imho that could have been an interesting combination. The pre-GM cars were well built and innovative. |

After ALL the prep work it was a relief to finally tow the 96 to the sprayers. They were astonished and said it was one of the best prepared cars they had seen. Too right

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Rust prevention guide of course. Brake lines, and bits already back in. Aiming for concourse level. Just ordering new stainless fasteners, zinc plating some parts, polishing others and putting new seals in brake master cylinder etc. The engine Is being done by a mate whilst I over see the work. Original sound proofing, clips, fasteners, grommets etc all refurbished and put back. Same with the fuel and brake lines as they were still good since 1976 (they run inside the car!)
Click image to enlarge The original petrol tank is till fine and the zinc coating you can see on bits is all original Click image to enlarge |

This is shaping up to be a great build. If I didn't like my anatomy the way I was born, I'd be sorely tempted to do something similar. Sadly, I feel my wife has other ideas about the use of my time and wallet. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.
