Shed roof covering - EDPM or Felt
The shed build goes up bank holiday weekend - yay ! at last some might say.
Anyways. I was thinking instead of standard felt, I was thinking of EDPM instead.

Anyone gone down this route for a shed roof? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I’m assuming it’s flat roof, ie a pent roof not an apex.

If flat and made of tightly butted and supported sheet material, I.e OSB supported at butt joints then EDPM will be massively superior to standard shed felt.

It will be more expensive as you will need the correct adhesives and edge profiles and likely end up with expensive adhesive left over .

But if done correctly will last 30- 50 years..

As for experience doing it, yes I did it for a neighbour, however at 30ft x12ft it was less of a shed, more of a timber framed outbuilding to be used as workshop and gym.

Tip. If using edpm lay it out over the roof for a while before glueing it down, in the sun it will heat up and stretch , noting it will get real hot so wear gloves when rolling back to apply adhesive. The advantage in doing this is once glued down in the heat it becomes shrink wrap tight in cooler weather when it tends to rain.

Hi Ian.

Yes its an Apex roof made of T&G boards with a centre internal roof truss (10ft x 10ft shed)

The edge profiles will be standard wooden end boards for a shed and I was going to fold the rubber sheet under the edge and attach. 1999 Defender TD5 110

EDPM can be used on Apex roofs and over T&G boards, however the sharp edges , especially at the ridge, eves and verges need to be rounded off by sanding and ensuring no nails / screws are protruding.
At the ridge I would be tempted to double up and glue a strip of EDPM that overhangs each side of the ridge by 200mm. Glue this down with the edge impact adhesive and use the impact adhesive again between that EDPM and the main EDPM going on top of it. The water based adhesive is then used to glue the EDPM to the roof boards and the impact adhesive 300mm around the perimeter.

Noting with the impact adhesive it’s instant grab so you need to get the fit perfect first time with no bubbles or kinks.

All good advice from Ianh, I covered a pent roof summer house last year and as long as you follow the instructions you can’t go far wrong. Felt is for cheap garden sheds, anything more and EDPM is the stuff to use.

If you have the budget I would go for cedar shingles which are easy to lay straight onto a boarded roof and will have a 30+ year life.
They are light and as long as you use stainless nails will last longer than the shed.

Plus they look good !
