I ended up renting a hilux last summer for a scout group camp to scotland (Landy had a clutch on it's way out and other niggles that meant I couldn't trust it)

I did miss the low box when maneuvring a trailer. I was disappointed that on a run the fuel economy wasn't noticeably better than my 20+year old defender.

Other than that... Quiet, comfortable for 5 people. Oodles of power. Air Con, totally capable of dragging the trailer through campsite tracks... Was great!

All hilux's have low range (well the 4x4 ones do)

Yes but you're forced to use 4lo, which on tarmac means a load of tyre chirping and scrubbing when you're trying to reverse a trailer in tight spaces! If they had 2lo it would be spot on

There's a hack for the Mk7's (not sure about the Mk8 which I have) to enable the 4 low 2wd, and also to keep the traction control off over 20mph or whatever stupid low speed it cuts out at.

All that aside, I'm loving mine.

It had a military 12 pin NATO socket on it (as the main thing I used to tow was my old GKN 3/4 ton trasiler and later on my Penman.

I made an adaptor to convert the 12 pin to a civvy 7 pin socket.
