If I was you I'd be checking the full run of the headlamp wiring from the switch forwards. It sounds like someone has modified the lighting circuit so the headlights run full time.
Look for a floating relay somewhere behind the instrument binnacle or in the engine bay. |

Some carnage -- tapped all the wires into the light switch then down into a mod within the fuse panel. a challenge but not horrible

If you have not already done so, you should install a headlight wiring loom to take the load off the switch. Glad you got your issue sorted.
