Interesting! We see loads of businesses now using hybrid workload - some in the public cloud, but more on-premise. Even some companies that started "in the cloud" have now created on-premise services (I believe "Uber" are a case here, they started "in the cloud" and now have on-premise services I believe). We're seeing a move to hybrid as the future, keeping "crown jewels" on site because of latency or data sovereignty reasons, and less important workload in the cloud... Sounds like you're similar in that 30% stays on site. Flexible capacity deals from vendors are much cheaper than (for instance) AWS or similar? We are due to start having discussions about the kit out of the new server room.
I think for small businesses the cloud works, but based on the ingress/egress costs etc the figures I have see (just for one element of the business) the costs are quite a lot. IMHO I think its cheaper to maintain on prem and we have a lot more control. Ok, we do have support costs, room heating/cooling etc but I think these costs can be cheaper than a cloud setup. We do have cloud storage for our backup system but this soon gets consumed. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I have read about Netware servers been practically bomb proof, and been online for years with out any down time at all.
I studied the CompTIA and bit of CISCO and windows XP and windows 2003 server. Never got me anywhere at all sadly. I do still have a bit of a play now and again, but no where near as often. Mad how the tech has changed. the good old mighty Dial up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |
