Do you have a cargo guard as well? The reason for asking is that personally I would be very reluctant to fit window grilles and and a guard if the plan was to carry children in the back. With grilles and a guard the only means of escaping quickly in an emergency would be the back door. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Thanks for the heads up! No we have no dog/cargo guard Otherwise how could they fight with the others? Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Sorry if I overstepped the thin line of brevity, but above post was made tongue in cheek. I do speak as one whose 110 has a load guard, security grills on the rear windows and do very occasionally have my boys in the remaining bench seat in the rear.
I put external grills on mine as that way the windows can be opened fully, when on longer trips(not expeditions) my dogs are with us and after filming the windows with a really dark film it can provide a reasonable enviroment for them in summer. With the car locked, the rear windows fully open there is a adequate supply of air without any security issues with either the dogs getting out or somebody getting in. With the windows shut the rear of the motor is a little more secure when carrying tools and equipment. I did think of putting in series solid sides but decided against that because of the ventilation the windows provide |

Why not make your own.
I just got some 50mm galvanised mesh, a bit of cutting, shaping and filing the the mesh and got some rivnuts and bolted it to the inside of the rear door glass and the 2 small windows. I think it looks fine and cheap as chips. |

If it's for security, grilles will surely make a car thief look/think harder and can they really keep anyone out?
Defenders aren't very secure - if you live in an area prone to car crime, don't get one. if you have stuff likely to break the windows - secure it better. If you work for a security firm and carry prisoners around - ideal. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

This is another reason I am going for the external ones - wish Safari would reply Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Point taken entirely. However, I am hoping that parking in Italian towns during daylight hours with a big yellow claw on the steering wheel, alarm (crap though it is) and a (admittedly docile) dog in the back with (well ventilating) grills on the outside - the opportunist thief might pick another car... I speak slightly from experience.
Had a mk4 R32 Golf - new at the time and fairly desirable. Moved from secure parking in London to street parking in Bristol. On the third night they tried and failed to nick the alloys (cover sill ripped off, wheel nut covers missing). So I got extra locking nuts just in case - the following night they tried again (more nut covers missing), clearly saw the extra locking nuts so kicked in the entire front end. £3k in damage, I "dared" to claim to was given the "sentence" of a near doubling of my renewal cost. Sold the car shortly afterwards having calmed down form near incandescent rage. If I'd caught the scrotes, I'd probably still be behind bars so thank f*** I didn't. Conclusion reached - if you live somewhere prone to car crime, spend money on something else other than cars. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

You and all fellow sufferers have my sympathies. I have to admit it's one of the reasons I jibbed out and moved the family to Munich 17 years ago. I think a lot of things in the UK may have got even worse since then but I'm probably just more biased now - I hope so as my daughter wants to live there Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Safe as you can get down here. Quite the opposite in most cities. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

My understanding is that cargo barrier/dog guards next year will have to have an opening section into the passenger compartment to avoid this scenario, so might see a few 'redesigns' going on, and probably a few bargains to be had of old stock. I might well be incorrect but have it on good authority, probably the same people who made up the 'bull bars' legislation getting involved. I believe the land rover fitted version already has that facility, also handy if you need to put something long in the back (skis or ikea boxes maybe) DJ 1989 200tdi 90 csw 2011 110 usw Orkney grey Buy British 🇬🇧 Defender Clothing Designs available at http://www.rangesports.com/acatalog/Defender-Stuff.html |
