Please can you advise on the oil type I need to the front and rear diffs and is it the same for the transmission/gear box.

Many thanks

That is suitable for 2.2 or 2.4

Transfer box and diffs.

Gearbox must be GL4 which is different.* TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

While (open) axles and transfercase are pretty straight forward to lubricate, plain gearoil with some leeway in rating, a gearbox has syncros and the wrong oil can really mess with gear engagement. The syncros can also be of brass which is incompatible with some GL5 oils. So you really want to follow the manufacturers published gearbox fluid. I have not looked it up, but I sure that is well publicized.

Transfer cases use brass shims in the centre diff so caution is warranted there as well. GL4 gear oils are fine for the transfer case. Some GL5 oils contain additives that can affect brass parts so do not use GL5 in a stock transfer case. If you fit an Ashcroft ATB centre diff in the transfer case, then it is ok to use GL5.

^^^^ This one is a bit difficult, though the Castrol guide suggests this to be the same for diffs and transfer box so I went for it.
Equally, the GL4 has different properties, where the Trnasfer box also has to prevent wear as well just the same as the axles.
One thing for sure though is GL4 in the gearbox, I went for that.
I’m my most recent full service, I followed the Castrol oil guide fully, very pleased with the results of that.

Only thing I’d suggest is performance dot4 brake fluid, not the cheaper one as the specs are a lot better, and higher boiling point.

I used to use Fuchs, but now am on Castrol.

Parts wise I use Genuine LR parts, fit and forget for a while. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

The gold bottles which are fully synthetic, are often higher specs in the tech papers.

80/90 is thicker, particularly in the cold, and from that adds some drag and lower MPG.
There is lifespan as well, the cheaper stuff often has a shorter service interval.

My view is if it’s cheaper, it’s for a reason.

I buy quality, as it’s to protect the components, and those components aren’t cheap.

If you buy lower grade, it typically needs changing sooner, also bear in mind a diff is expensive as well as other items in the drivetrain.

As always, choice is choice.

If you have not already read this topic on the subject of Puma gearbox, transfer box, diffs and engine Oils then it should help.
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic8707.html

One thing to note while reading is that Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 is now sold under a different name - Castrol Transmax Manual Multivehicle 75W-90. https://www.broughtonlubricants.co.uk/cast...w-90-group

Redline MT-90 also has the correct spec for the transmission.
