6 months after the left side, the right side has failed.
Hoping for a good will gesture towards cost. Left side I got an 80 % contribution, it’s only 6 months and 1200 miles down the road! 2021 car. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy Last edited by Gareth on 25th Mar 2025 10:25pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Yes seen that. I just feel that a new genuine headlamp will be better. I’m not paying full price though! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Update. The Powerful UK solution will not work in Matrix LEDs where the drl light has gone out. The part on their website is for the halo (the ring around the headlamp) only. They have not yet developed a repair for the DRL (the 2 square lights).
I have come across an electronics repair company local to me who say they can repair. My car is booked in, I’ll let you know how I get on. The Land Rover response was not good. “Hello Mr Roberts, hope you're well. I spoke with JLR in regards to your driverside headlamp, they have agreed to assist with 40% towards the overall cost. The total repair cost comes in at £2,443.55, meaning after JLR's contribution of £977.42 (40%) your remaining 60% will be £1466.13 you'd have to pay should you wish to proceed. Let me know if you want to proceed and I will get our parts team to order the part and once here I will come back to you to get you booked in. Headlamp units for my old Defender were £15 each. Time taken to replace, 10 minutes. Although it was usually just the bulb that was needed and not the whole unit.

This has been a bit of a worrying time, as LR refused to offer a decent contribution as the car is now over 4 years old. They did offer a 40% parts contribution, but this would still have left me with a bill around £2k to fix the problem.
After a discussion with Powerful UK who said that they couldn’t provide the part for the drl, just the halo I contacted a specialist electronics repair company in Oldham. They advertised on EBay that they could repair the unit in 2 hours while I waited. All for £300. With nothing to lose I booked it in. Went along this morning and left the car with them whilst I took the dog for a walk. 2 hours later I returned and he was just finishing off. All working as it should and a neat job that reuses the original lens and headlamp shell. He said they used heat to open it, and then repaired the failed module. This means you cannot tell that it’s ever been opened. Fingers crossed it stays that way, and if it doesn’t he said it would be easier to get in a second time because of the glue they used would release at a lower temperature. KG Auto Electronics in Oldham. Worth a try if you’re stuck with a failed headlamp (or any other electronics issue) 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

I'm so glad to hear it! This is excellent news and a wish for someone with the same problem. It doesn't have to fail again! Congratulations, despite having to spend £300!! Defender 110 SE I6 D250 23MY

Even £300 is 50 times the cost of £6 H3 headlight bulb.
There's no way the lights are 50 times better and I've not changed 50 headlight bulbs in 40 years of motoring! The workshop quote for £2444 would buy 407 headlight bulbs ![]() Progress or Profit? |

Not to mention the problems that the headlight "arms race" causes on the road.
Modern headlights are really far too bright and far too many seem badly adjusted. It is also noticeable how many modern auto-dipping cars fail to dip for oncoming traffic on dual-carriageways (or perhaps how many cars are driven by inconsiderate morons who don't dip on dual-carriageways). Why are automatic lights and automatic dipping lights even necessary? |
