There's no way the lights are 50 times better and I've not changed 50 headlight bulbs in 40 years of motoring!

The workshop quote for £2444 would buy 407 headlight bulbs Shocked
Progress or Profit?

I don't think the objective is to make a better headlight. The objective is to make more profit. The lights are better so they can justify asking more money for them.

While my Discovery 4 bi-xenon lights are much brighter than my Defender's standard halogen, I can drive down the same road with my defender just fine. So if that's good enough, anything better for a lot of money is relatively little gained.

Real improvement would be better for the same cost..

It is also curious, is it not, that on the one hand we are encouraged to be "green" and "save the planet" (which, incidentally, will be just fine for billions of years after the human race has exterminated itself) yet on the other we have headlights which cost £2400 to replace, are complex electronic assemblies with some extremely nasty materials involved, have a huge manufacturing cost and complex process, and are on the whole totally unrecyclable, because this is somehow better than a small metal part with a tiny glass bulb containing minute quantities of an inert but admittedly harmful gas, which costs pennies to make and is almost 100% recyclable.

How on earth is this better for the environment?

And don't get me started on EV batteries.... Evil or Very Mad

Hey Blackwolf I completely agree with you on this. I told the dealer to stick his £2400 headlamp where the led’s don’t shine.

It’s frankly disgusting that LR and lots of other brands make components unrepairable, when quite obviously they are.

Why? It’s obviously a cost saver to the manufacturer. They will sell more units because most will not have the basic mechanical experience of you and I to question the ‘official’ line of not repairable.

It’s not a complicated unit, there’s not much in there.

From what he was saying, it’s all major manufacturers doing this now.

Interesting question came up in the pub, are Ineos sticking to the old LR principal of repairable in the field? Or are their headlamp sealed for life? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

From what I've seen it's a sealed unit. As for "repairable in the field", despite their initial messaging IA still have not released workshop manuals to owners, see here: https://www.theineosforum.com/threads/work....12411552/

I believe that the Grenadier headlights are the same units (classic) Defender owners tend to fit as LED upgrades, so not repairable but easily replaceable in minutes anywhere. You could probably upgrade a Grenadier to Wipac Crystals with Osram Nightbreakers if you wanted. Rolling with laughter

Had a look at these Osram nightbreakers going to give them a shot. It's not £2444 ( per side ) but probably better than the bog standard halogen light I currently have fitted.
