M57 Swap questions
Hi guys.

Picking up a new to me 110 USW this week. It will have the 2.2 lump in it. My previous defender was a farm spec 110 van with a fully tuned Td5 making 210bhp on the Alive dyno with their turbo kit.

I plan to keep this defender for at least the next ten years and do not want to go down the tuning route with the stock unit. I think the M57 would be the optimal engine and the bmw gearbox would be great.

Has anyone on the forum documented the swap? What engine management solutions did they run?

There are loads of variants of the M57, so which is best for defender duties? I will be doing touring, off road and on road with trailers and caravans. I expect the miles to stack up quite promptly.

Good to be returning to the defender after 2 years of daily driving a 600cc japanese pickup truck that weighs 800kg Rolling with laughter

X53, X5 with the 218bhp is the scenario I went for, which appears to be one of the more recomended setups from what I can gather. The engine loom is far longer than the 3 / 5 series variants.

The 218bhp will likely have an older 6hp26, but can easily be modernised with a 8HP.

I think the electronic 6HP28 can be fitted aswell, but personally I'd either go miles away or keep the game (gearbox)

If your DIY, house of torque website provides many usefull guides, info and basically all the supplies to attack the swap.

Mine should be 270 / 280bhp with 600nm and the 8HP and I friggin love it!

Theres a couple of builds on here, but the facebook groups are amazing source of info.

I've not come accross a comprehenisve guide as so to speak, but its fairly self explanatory once you get stuck in, and the H.O.T give many brillaint guides on their website.

Side note; I retrofitted M57 to a old 84' 110. Getting the engine swap to work with a modern Puma era defender will likely be more tricky!

There are quite a few on here that have done swaps with various versions into varying ages of defender. Did you try s search on it? Cheers

Hi I will certainly have a closer look. I was wondering if there were any current members that had completed the swap, so I could pick their brains. Lots of useful info in the first post already. Thanks. I will try to remember to post a build log as well.

Not wanting to dissuade you, the M57 is a fine engine and popular swap, although I'd guess you are looking at circa £5k+ to buy all the bits and get it up and running.

The 2.2 lump might not be the greatest in the world, but a proper map and bigger intercooler don't half make a difference and in many ways are more than enough for a Defender. And substantially cheaper than an M57 swap.

My Uncles 65 plate 90 makes 190hp on the dyno, but the torque from low down is lovely, 5th gear will pull from something like 25-30mph all the way up to illegal motorway speeds with a really nice shove in the back. An M57 might be quicker if lined up for a drag race, but real world day to day I'd say the difference isn't as much as you'd think.

If wanting to spend a chuck of money on an engine conversion, I'd probably be looking at a Jaguar V8 swap over an M57.
