I seem to recall that MW Machines have some rough costings on their website - the kit from them is around £4K, plus the engine and gearbox, plus whatever other ancillary bits you need...
Even for a BMW box into a TD5 - you are going to need the box, electronics, transfer box adaptor (~£1000), gearbox adaptor (~£1000), transmission mounts etc etc - it's not going to be particularly cheap... |

You need gbox to lt230 adaptor, synchro sell them, this has one of the mounts on it. Other mount on lt230. Picks up on std location. Then need gbox to engine adaptor and presumably engine mounts to be moved fwd of space permits or keep engine mounts and move tbox mounts back and custom props. Cheers

By the time you have done that and sorted the electrical control side there won't be much in it. Also need to sort hi/low and diff lock actuation Cheers

Yeah its quickly becoming is it worth it for a modern auto td5 or just M57 Auto it
If I kept the TD5 the engine wouldnt move, the rest would to suit and yeah custom props but thats no biggy at all. Air and electric actuators are very common now so thats fairly easy to do, always the ole D2 cable linkage as well if needs must. However the more I think about it Id look at seeing if I could do electronically controlled low range and diff lock, then again that kind of detracts from it being a Defender. It's not the engineering doing it, it's the extra cost for actuators. Cheers

I wonder if anyone here would know...
My dads getting rid of his battered 2007 L322, which had a recon box 2 years ago and has done maybe 8k miles... could be a good contender to hold on to if it fits with the M57 or Td5 autos. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

The L322 has the small bell housing version of the engine to which only fits the GM 5 speed auto which is apparently made of cheese !
However I have read of a a conversion ring to allow fitting the later 6 speed large bell housing ZF auto to the small bellhousing engine but I suppose that's another £1k. If anyone is thinking of doing an M57 conversion then the M57n and 6 speed auto from an 04-06 X5 offers the best bang for your buck. The X gearbox has a good mounting face for the LT230 adapter unlike the 2wd version. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Banks I’ve pondered the idea of a modern relaxing auto for the commute many a time….. but spoiling a nicely tuned TD5 manual to do so imo isn’t the answer. The effort it requires to drive it makes it….. the very reason I sold my2.2. Yes it was easier to drive, had a working heater and more refined but dull as dishwater!! I’ve contemplated keeping the TD5 for a weekend car….. maybe a pick up, small van for work….. but then they’re dull also, and you end up becoming another angry lemming
I love my TD5 it makes me smile every time I drive it, so why not drive it and enjoy it everyday, and chuckle at all the lemmings ?? I’m not a fan of the m57, I get and appreciate why people do it, when you need the ruggedness of a defender and travel miles, often off the beaten track, but that’s not me.’ But isn’t that all part of the uniqueness of the real defender ownership. Apples and pears? |

Pretty much took the words out of my mouth
Exactly how I feel! I think my 110 caught wind of this post because the clutch has decided to fail Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

What about fitting the Puma gearbox as I think they work with M57s?!?! 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

1st post but this thread has piqued my interest as I come from having had two TD5's in 90 and 110 guise. My wife can't quite get on with the manual box and the next Landy will have to be an auto.
I have looked at M57 swaps but I don't think i'm gaining that much for the effort, I loved my TD5's and they were both standard, not even remapped. I have also hated the 8hp in every car I have driven with one in. I had a TDV8 L322 with the 6HP and that was pretty prefect. I would be more tempted to keep the simplicity with the Defender as I had spoken to Dan at DT engine solutions about this 4hp24 hydraulic box for my 110 but I ended up selling it as I needed an auto for the longer motorway towing trips. I've settled on a two car solution for now though and the next Defender will be a TD5 with an auto as we have other cars for the longer tirps. |

I have had 19js, 2.5 na, 2.5 petrol, tdis, tgvs, td5s, 2.4s and drove 2.2 for work forna while. All mapped or even chipped in the early days or fip tweeked etc I currently have m57 130 and 90.
I have had 4hp24, 6hps and 8hps combined with the manual options on above. For me the m57 is leaps and bounds above any of the above in terms of torque and refinement combined with power delivery. Economy is good too. It's transformed my 130 into a capable cruiser rather than working everything so hard (was 2.4) If your running pretty std weight vehicles, Limited towing or hard work then probably not much to gain m57 wise for the cost. My daily is a 2.4 110, when engine goes that will go m57 6hp. Mt82 only goes onto a narrow block m57, 204 or 184 I believe although synchro were bringing out wide block to mt82 adaptors. Like James I have run many engines over the last 30 years and i have to agree with his comments.
The M57 and 6hp auto knocks spots off of all of them in terms of drivability, not driving fast or hard just everyday driving. It's not working hard to keep up with modern traffic and cruises at motorway speeds effortlessly where you're working Land Rovers engines hard. It has transformed my enjoyment of driving the 90. It's not just another niche engine conversion, it's the engine and box that BMW should have put in the Defender. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |
