I’m not a HETAS engineer but used to work in planning with building control.
They said I could fit mine myself in line with the manufacture instructions and guidelines on web. A hearth is not mentioned. It has to stand on a non combustible material that must protrude a certain measurement out from the front doors. This would give you the size of harth you would require if it was on a wooden floor. Solid floor should be fine. Personally I found installers to be very cagey about how to fit as I think they know how easy it is. |

Hi, I’m not a HETAS engineer but we have had 2 woodburner fitted in the last couple of months and both have had HETAS certificates issued, I have added pics below, as you’ve commented it doesn’t make sense and I think Bowbearer has hit the nail on the head, i hope you get sorted without too much of a faff

Document J of the buildings regs is freely downloadable, and covers all the details in a fairly easy to read way.
Hetas, however, seem to make up their own rules as they go along. My advice would be just to get building control in, if you need to. It will be way simpler. If it's compliant with doc J, it will pass, and if it is not, it will not. It's clear cut, not "fuzzy" and made up on the spot. Hetas will frequently install stuff that's non compliant under doc J, if it's easier for them to do so, as they sign it off themselves. You can tell I have little respect for them. |

When I built my place ten years ago I fitted one burner and had a hetas registered chap I know fit the second one and checked the first, then signed them both off. When the building inspector came he didn’t even look at them, but I must of had to send off the certificate to get the final sign off from the council. The regs are simple to understand, distances from walls, beams etc, flue sizes, cold air duct and so on. The hearth had to be a certain distance from the front, not that much from memory ( 8-10 inches?) but I can’t see why it would make any difference on a concrete floor anyway, unless it was carpeted - like mine is. The impression I got from building control was that they like the self - certified certificates ( part P, hetas etc ) as they don’t actually understand most of the regulations anyway. 1983 110 automatic OM606

The hearth should be a minimum of 12mm thick but this would then require a fender to prevet any rugs being laid over the hearth.
Otherwise the hearth should be 50mm thick. The depth of the hearth wants to be 300mm minimum. Any part of the stove should be a minimum of 150mm from any combustable materials (for example: any skirting board used either side of the fireplace). You can use Oftec or Local Authority (Council) to register with buildings control (to adhere to Part J) to avoid paying through the nose to a Hetas fitter. You should also notify your home insurance company. An issue with downloading regs is making sure you are reading the latest revision, this usually means paying a subscription. |

Many thanks for all the advice, the instance above is for a burner set in a fireplace which has different regs to freestanding from my reading.
The reason for the HETAS engineer is that the refitting of the burner is part of an insurance claim, flood not fire. We went from a wood floor to a stone tile floor.
