the letters that spell DEFENDER usually arrive (to the dealer) on a two part template, which allows for all curvatures of the bonnet.

The dealership said it the letters on the template must have been the wrong way around.
Good to see the vehicle was properly quality checked. |

l can't see how that could happen, unless it was a batch of faulty letter transfers.
The new Defender has been rated by Autocar U.K. second most reliable large SUV. |

It’s a long story but it’s been in the body shop for 2 months due to a stone chip on delivery.
3 attempts later to respray the panel and it’s still not right. |

I work for a company that makes badging like this.
The letters are cast on a long sheet of material. This sheet of letters has the word DEFENDER spelled out and has adhesive already embedded on the back as part of the process. The letters are either die cut, or laser cut around the perimeter of the letters. A technician would then peel away the "weed" or matrix. (the unwanted film from between the letters). In this process if the die cut wasn't deep enough some of the letters would be picked up with the matrix and need to be put back by hand. They would be installed with the help of a template to ensure the spacing is correct. The shape of the D and E are similar enough that someone could have mixed them in the templating process. The sheet would look like this with many logos DEFENDER DEFENDER DEFENEDR DEFENDER DEFENDER A sheet of adhesive premask (something like a wide tape) is applied to the face of the letters and then the sheet is flipped over. The backing (liner) is peeled away and new liner is applied. So now you have a sheet of letters with a fresh backing (liner) and premask on the front. Then you send it to the cutting machine which die cuts the rectangle which you see in a previously posted picture. It has the little tabs and locating holes. Those are all used in a jig to locate the logo on the hood for installation. Long story short, those letters were transposed in the manufacturing of the badge. I've sat at many auto factories looking at this exact issue as well as logos that were installed out of alignment. Really not fun to have to remove those and replace with new while standing in a massive 100 acre parking lot of all new cars in the baking hot sun... |
