Wipers blowing fuses
Hi everyone,

I would like to test a theory before I get chance to stip down the dash.
My 13 plate 110 blew a fuse for the wipers this morning. No indication on why this happened, so I replaced it and it was fine until this evening and again not working. I have now gone though 5 15a fuses with a progressive worsening of the problem. The last one blew instantly as soon as the ignition went on.

So to park the wipers I dropped in a 25a fuse. Now this did not blow, but now the wipers are continuous no mater where the stalk is placed. Speed does very though.

My thoughts before going to to pull it apart it a failed stalk with a short to groud.

If I pull the relay would that help, need to use it tomorrow and with the current weather need to fix pronto. I have left it with no fuse at the moment.

Any pointers or thoughts would be appreciated.

Have a look at the wiper boxes incase they’re seizing up.

Wiper boxes and rack most likely seized, could be putting high load on the motor drawing excessive current.

Lube the wheel boxes with a light penetrating oil like WD40 as a temporary fix, let it bass off too just in case there is any sparks near the motor you never know.

You’ll likely need a new rack and wheel boxes plus park switch, if unlucky a new motor but that might not be the case if it runs okay without load. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Morning

Same symptoms as my wipers just before the drivers side wiper gearbox seized up. Unfortunately you will have to bite the bullet, remove the dash and replace the gearboxes. Not as bad as it first sounds and should be completed in 1.5 - 2 hours.

If it’s just the spindle through the bulkhead peel back the outer seal and squirt motorcycle chain spray and some wiggling back and forth

Thanks for the reply, how did you get the wipers to stop? The only way I can do this atm is to pull the main fuse.

Just my thoughts but it sounds as if the wiper switch has been damaged, probably by inserting the higher rated fuse after the lower rated ones kept blowing.

When my wipers started to blow the fuse I too put a higher rated one in. In the end it damaged the wiper motor and I had to replace the entire wiper array.

Check the wiper switch as it may have welded itself to permanently on.

uff. Sorry, but that wasn‘t just a bad idea but actually dangerous.

Fuses usually blow for a reason. It‘s never clever to just replace them and never with a higher rated one. And 10A more is a lot!

Fuses are there to protect the wires from going up in flames in case of a short.
If the wire survives, the next weaker element in the circuit may suffer, adding another problem.

Frank makes a very valid point which many people fail to recognise and that is the fuse is there to protect the wiring and prevent breakdown of the insulation and possible fire. The fuse is not used to protect things like wiper motors, heater motors etc - just the circuit. Defender 90XS SW
