United Kingdom 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Barolo Black
22" Style 5098 wheels in Gloss Black for off roading
Hello everyone,

I recently placed an order for a new Defender 90 X Dynamic HSE to take the place of my beloved 2013 Defender 90. I will be selling my 2013 very soon rarely used with 12k miles on the clock.
for the new defender 90 I've chosen the 22" Style 5098 wheels in Gloss Black and I'm curious if anyone here has experience with them. Do you recommend them? I live in an area with quite a few potholes, and I plan to use the new vehicle for shooting during the game seasons. The terrain will mostly be muddy with some light off-roading, but nothing too extreme like rocky paths or river crossings!

I was thinking to downgrade them to 19" Style 6010, Gloss Black wheels, with all terrain tyres.

I would like to hear from anyone who had a similar dilemma and or experience, or currently using either the 19 " 6010 or 22" 5098.

Thanks 2.2 90 XS

The factory tire size for the 19" wheels are 255/65R19. This is a JLR-specific tire size and the only options for A/Ts are the factory Goodyear Wrangler Adventures, which are not that great off-road, and the Goodyear Duratracs, which are quite good, but there are better A/T tires out there. I originally specced my Defender with the 19" Style 6009 wheels. That was a mistake because of the lack of tire options. I bought a set of Style 516 20" wheels from an LR4/D4 XXV Edition and am now running Falken Wildpeak AT3W sized LT265/60R20. In 2025 BFGoodrich will offer the KO3 in the OEM size per their website. The 22" wheels are the worst size when it comes to off-roading. They don't have a ton of sidewall.

If I were you, I'd get a set of 20" wheels and go for a slightly wider tire like I did, as you'll have a lot of choices. You still have plenty of sidewall on the 20" wheels. I have done some moderate off-roading in my Defender on the 20" wheels and I haven't had any issues. ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐’ ๐๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ (Pangea Green over Acorn/Lunar)

Hi zahy, what is the standard wheel for your model? Like CincyRovers1 says, 20" inch wheels give you many more tyre options. I'm not sure about UK market options but here gloss black or 22" wheels couldn't be optioned with off-road tyres. But that was for MY24 so it may well be different now. But the description of your use case sounds like off-road tyres would be the choice.

I'm on the 6010 19" in gloss black on factory fit Wrangler A/T.
3 years, 52k km (32k miles) and still going strong.

I do a lot of motorway miles and occasionally some light off roading on mud/grass and gravel tracks.
Lots of rubber means they are very comfy, relatively quiet, fuel efficient, and look 'the part

As others have said the 19" is a strange size and you're not going to get many (any?) other choices. Sidewall is also weak.

20" is better if you want more choice. Have you considered the 5098? They look good in person and gives a bit more rubber and sidewall. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

20โ€ pretty much the same design but will give more sidewall. Just get them painted. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Plenty of brand new sets on eBay, buy them and sell your 22โ€ wheel set for a good chunk more!

If you choose 20โ€ wheels I would suggest looking at aftermarket offerings. There are so many better options for the new Defender. WARNING.

Thanks

The 22" wheels are fine. Our car originally came with them, but we decided to downsize to 20" wheels with off-road tyres. This is mainly because of how much the 22" wheels sucked off-roading. We were on the train and it was unexpectedly muddy one day. Thick clay mud and ruts. The road tyres on the 22s just couldn't cope, and we were worried about getting a pinch flat as well. Our other car (which shall remain unnamed) was not really designed for off-roading originally but does come with off-road tyres left the Defender in the dust on that trail. With the 20s, however, it goes great off-road. We actually had to get them in a rush as we were invited on an expedition to Fraser Island by a mate, and they did amazing!!! The car also seems to drive better on the smaller wheels, almost like the 22s were an afterthought. For your situation, I'd recommend getting some 20" Style 5098 wheels in Grey, and just get them painted in Gloss Black with the standard off-road tyres. The only disappointment you could have with those is that they don't have 'DEFENDER' written on the spokes like the 22s. Let me know if you have any questions about my logic.

I have a set of genuine LR 19โ€ with Goodyear Duratracโ€™s fitted and also OEM TPMS valves that have covered about 7000 miles with the spare unused.

They have been used off road so the wheels have some marks on them but noting too bad.

Pic below of the car with the wheels on.

PM me if they are of any interest Thumbs Up

J77 yes but they are 18โ€ painted std LR wheels and if the OP has ordered 22โ€ then due to the brakes the 18โ€ wonโ€™t fit Thumbs Up Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free
