Link here http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic34176.html - should be Ford Spec WSS-M2C-934-B, equivalent to ACEA C1.
Opie (site sponsor) do a good range- excellent service. Impossible to find in Halfords, but I think Europart stock some. Hope that helps. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. Thanks for the link.
That is typical of the threads I have read, with plenty of discussion/argument over the exact spec down to the last digit. I wasn't so much asking what the spec is... but rather where are people getting the info from and also inviting any comment on the situation where the owners manual is so general (implying you can use almost anything) and the oil manufactures/suppliers websites having no suggestions as though it is some super rare unobtanium grade. edit to add, if I select no DPF on the websites I get a selection of results, but none for with DPF. |

Nice discussion here:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defen...ice-4.html On new 110 Heritage at 5500km I recently had to add 2x500 ml at a service station - to find the exact specified oil at the roadside may not always be possible. Have a Bluetooth Ultragauge displaying on an old iPad - and to watch the oil temperature readings as road and load conditions vary - is fascinating - also how long it may take for oil to reach optimum working temperature of say 100 deg. Celsius. |

only use oil conforming to the required spec, and always keep 1L in your vehicle for emergencies.
Odd that some have had to add oil, my 2.4 has never consumed a drop in 6 years -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I normally buy 2x4l of Castrol Magnatec 5w30 A1 from Euro Car Parts for about £50 and a filter from a LR dealer (I forget the name of, but they are good) who sells parts via eBay.
I see Euro Car Parts now have Magnatec 5w30 A5 spec oil at £26. This meets the FORD WSS-M2C-913-B required for a 2.2 with DPF. [Edited to add] Filter part number is LR030778 and the last one I bought came from hatfields_land_rover_hull at £11.50. I've bought genuine service parts from harwoodsgroup as well via eBay and they were very helpful. Last edited by milesr3 on 10th Jan 2016 9:24am. Edited 3 times in total |

If you have a DPF, ANY 5w/30 synthetic oil that has an ACEA C1 or C3 rating is fine.
for vehicles without a DPF, ANY 5W/30 Synthetic oil with an ACEA rating of A1/B1 up to C3 is fine. We run a vast various manufacturer fleet [Over 1200 vehicles] and only use 5W/30 C1/C3 .. Never ever had an oil issue Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Dave H, useful stuff. My Oil light has just come on and I am beyond warranty. So, I'm planning to DIY.
As such, a couple of questions if I may? Mine's a 2.2 btw. First, how much do I need (in litres)? Second, will the service light automatically extinguish when done or do I need someone to plug into the ECU? Third, do I need to pre fill the filter? Something I've heard mentioned... Many thanks in advance. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey Last edited by Grenadier on 9th Jan 2016 3:33pm. Not a drop here either in 7 years and 80k km You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

7 litre capacity officially, although 'dipstick' capacities do vary by 1/2 litre on some Oil indicator will need resetting. some say you can reset it manually using the 'Ford' system [Ignition on, depress and hold down accelerator and clutch pedal simultaneously until oil indicator resets, then switch off ignition, release pedals] But we find that very hit/miss on Defenders, easier to just plug it in. You don't 'need' to pre fill filter, but doing so wont hurt [I do] and is easy to do with the later tin can filter HTH Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Thanks for the contributions. The screenshot of the service manual is especially useful.
It seems the actual situation is quite straightforward... to play it by the book use '934-B or use alternatively any C1/C2 spec. It is made more complicated than it need be, because: 1) LR can't be bothered to put the spec in the owners manual 2) Castrol do have a suitable Edge Professional product but don't put it on their website (maybe because it is only officially available through LR dealers?) 3) Mobil do have a Super C1 '934-B but don't have it on their website 4) Opie do stock several 934-B approved products - but can't be bothered to list them in the vehicle search function As it happens, Shell do list their Helix product on their website, but I hadn't tried them before my first post. It would be interesting to see if LR tried to dispute any warranty claim for maybe engine damage or DPF problem on the grounds of not using the "correct" specification of oil - when they don't list it in the owners book. Thanks again. edit: just to add, most people probably already know, but just in case - watch out for Halfords search tool because it will offer you the wrong oil for 2.2 with DPF. |

Frustratingly, several suppliers get the listing wrong for a 2.2 w/DPF if you do enter the vehicle details. I suspect GSF may stock a suitable oil, but their website insists on only showing oils thjat match the wrong spec. I completely failed to find anything locally, so I bought some mail order from Opie. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not ... oh! That is a dent!
