Probably your heater control valve leaking a little, letting some of the hot coolant into you heater matrix when the valve should be making. Common issue. Do a search

I had just topped up the coolant level to possibly above the max line........is there a connection there?

It wont be the slight overfill in the coolant. It'll be the control valve failed. Get someone to operate the hot/cold control and see if the cable operates the valve under the bonnet. If it doesn't then your cable has come off the back of the rotary control on the dash, if it does then your heater valve has had it.

My heater did the same thing last week! However it was the control cable that had slipped so on cold it was still a bit open!

Check to where the control cable links to the valve. Sometimes its not down fully coming from open. Simply push it down and all will be well.

Zsd is a far more knowledgable member than me, but it's not necessarily failed if the cable is still attached. Mine was stuck, so a little bit of lube/WD40 on the various moving parts, plus squirted down the engine bay end of the cable and pulled in/out a few times, now works fine! I promise that's the only long thing I was lubing and pulling back and forth Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

As ZSD says either the cable operating the heater valve has become maladjusted, most likely at the valve end (but the possibility of breakage at the knob end (if I'm allowed to say "knob end" on a family forum) cannot be totally ruled out), or else the heater valve has broken up internally.
Puma heater valves are notorious for being about as cheap and tacky as it is possibly to get but cost a fortune from JLR. Elsewhere on the forum a link was recently posted to the same valve (now also inflicted upon Citroen owners and a few others) at a much more reasonable price. |

my understanding is that replacement heater valves kept defenders being built for the last few years. building them was at a loss but replacement heater valves more than covered the losses.

good luck with the fix.
I just had to push my valve a little further manually as the cable has become mal-adjusted. I suspect what I'll need to do is get the outer sheath and unclip it near the valve and move it towards the valve and then clip it back on again (I'm hoping that's all it'll need) ? |

OK just had a quick look, the lever operates the valve OK and fully opens (hot) but the valve is reluctant to fully close again, I can push it to fully closed by hand so there is enough cable to allow the movement, is the valve spring loaded to one of the positions at all, or is it fully dependant on the cable movement, ie if the valve is sticky the cable does not have enough force to fully close the valve. Can the valve be serviced or is it caked up for life ?

No spring, totally dependent upon the cable.
No, it cannot be serviced. It is however very satisfying when you stamp on one and then throw it in the bin (take it off the metal bracket first or you'll hurt your foot)! |

Hi there!!I've got the same problem with my Puma heating. The system would not shut and warm air keeps heating the cabin.
I've bought the valve and change it today, before that I have checked behind the inside front panel if the cable was ok and still attached to the control dial. After changing the valve for a new one LR original, can't tell my anger when the thing was still the same as before, hot air keeps flowing inside the cabin but here is the surprise: On the right hand vents the air is cool like it should be when it is ouside air intake selected; but on the left hand vents the air is hot like if the valve didin't have close!!!! What is happening? Why on one side air intake temp is ok and on the other is hot!!??? I would appreciate if someone who had the same experience share the solution!! Thanks!!! |
