I have a twin camera set up on mine and would agree that the view from the reversing camera is not great..it really needs to be a few feet higher to give a good picture and clear details of where the back edges of the bumpers are..
I get a great view of my spare wheel 😂..but at least a good idea of clearance directly behind the vehicle.. To be fair I only fitted this twin camera system as I had it from me motorhome days..excellent on a big coach built but a bit ott on a defender.. |

I have two, one in the rear number plate light pointing backwards and one on the rear edge of the roof rack pointing downwards. The latter is by far the most useful.
Both get covered with crud due to the shape of the vehicle, but I have just got in the habit of wiping them whenever I walk past. to get in or out. |

Hello
I fitted one to the rear number plate holder as I didn't want to drill any holes. I did this around 7 years ago and its been great, Its slightly off set. However I could still hook up a trailer on my own or get very close in parking gaps. Since I did this optmil I think it is produce a alloy plinth with the camera built in Location Click image to enlarge Plinth if you want it pre done / alloy https://www.lrparts.net/da8862-lrc1643-def...LCEALw_wcB Mines a £10 camera and its been fitted years, in all weather and works a treat |

I found when looking that there isnt many good positions for a camera so i drilled a small hole and used the rear cross member bolts. Gives a perfect reverse view

Mines in the washer jet location, with the washer jet relocated to the side.
Does everything from there except for viewing tow hitch, for that a second cam might be better and you can put a video switch in for that as well. Mines a Parkvision from Amazon, I’m pleased with the quality of it. The Optimil number plate light cam is good so I hear, but don’t forget to use a QUALITY video cable. Stinger do a good one. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Fitted a camera like this on the number plate light plinth. Used existing holes for the light wiring to get the cables inside the vehicle. Since it is oblique view, its hard to align the vehicle with a trailer using just the camera, but thats what the mirrors are for 😂
On the plus side, very easy to judge distance. Click image to enlarge 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Ian at IRB did this for me - together with another camera under the number plate plinth, selected via a discrete switch on the steering wheel cowling.

I have the Optimill. It’s a neat solution but the camera is about as budget as you can find and in my case didn’t benefit from better cables. It’s fine for my purposes and I think it looks lovely but if one needed a decent camera built in I would suggest buying one separately and replacing. I don’t blame Optimill though, they obviously had to make it to a price. If they did include a quality camera it may have put the unit out of reach for the customer. Originally I had a camera in my NAS step which I thought was amazing at the time. Unfortunately in wet weather it got covered in muck instantly making it useless. WARNING. I fitted a reversing camera to the center of the rear crossmember and to protect it fitted a home made cover above it using the existing nuts.

That is neat.
Some of them can be pretty rubbish resolution for sure, and dirty water etc a big problem too which is why I put mine up high, of course the tow hitch is low and out of sight. It would be wouldn’t it. This is the one I have: https://www.amazon.co.uk/PARKVISION-Revers...&psc=1 $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
