Handbrake drum rattle / rotation sound low revs
Hi all,

2012 90 ~60k

I have a rattle / almost dry bearing sound at low rpm when changing up through the gears, particularly noticeable at low speed when putting load on.

It doesn't happen when up to speed, or on the motorway, is not any more / less noticeable when cornering.

It also seems consistent with a clunky gear change again at low speeds / crawling in traffic.

The noise and clunky gear change almost goes completely when I lift the handbrake so it's just about engaging. I originally thought a dry rear diff as it appears to be mid/central sound but the oil has been changed with no audible difference. One other thought was the rear calipers rattling but the noise is almost rotational as if when rotating something isn't secured dead centre.

The handbrake light has been on for a while, although goes off when pushed down a little into it's resting position - as if the cable is too short.

Otherwise sounds lovely when the brake is lifted a little!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Possibly the UJ nearest the rear diff nose, or another they aren’t that easy to check in situ though so check them thoroughly.

You can get mud or in-balance in the handbrake drum caused by ingress but isn’t that common as it usually comes out.

The symptoms you mentioned does sound like a failed UJ as blackwolf suggests, especially as it improves at higher speed but more pronounced at lower speed. No Guts, No Glory.

Thank you both - agree not that easy to check in situ, a garage will have it soon..

The only thing I couldn't figure is why the sound lessens to almost nothing when the handbrake is lifted just a little.

I will provide feedback once it has been looked at.

Thanks again
