2012 DPF at end of life!
Here’s the situation, I am going to collect a Defender with 145k miles which had a new engine at 142k miles caused from o ring failure on oil filter, to cut a long story short it was a brand new engine, turbo, injectors and some other bits.

All professionally done and have spoken with workshop and seen all invoices etc etc etc

There is an advisory for DPF END OFF LIFE DUE TO MILEAGE.

Is this serious or just simply replacing?

It’s not a big job to replace the downpipe with DPF on a 2.2. Just quite an expensive one at circa £2299 for the part ! .However why are they saying it is near end of life due to mileage? The longevity of the DPF is influenced more by the type of mileage the vehicle has undertaken not the actual mileage I.e lots of short slow speed journeys are not good for the DPF, where as longer higher speed journeys are better for DPF life.

I have seen the high prices and was trying to avoid a replacement.

All I can tell you is there are 2 advisories on the invoice for the new engine from the previous owner, end of life and steering (simple repair).

I have called the workshop and they know there stuff on engines… regards the DPF I don’t honestly know how they have reached this conclusion. Perhaps a manual says (for example) 150k miles!!!

Easy enough to pick up a used DPF on eBay from reputable defender breakers for a ‘decent’ price these days. Usually come with some form of a short warranty. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

OR, if/when there is a problem you could have the DPF and EGR mapped out and replace the downpipe with a DPF shell. That would not comply with MOT rules, however the MOT is “currently “ only a visual inspection so most will pass with a good DPF shell. That would cost about the same as a new DPF but would improve the vehicle performance and engine longevity.

So you have lots of options.

I would see if you can get a discount based on them saying the DPF will likely need replacing.

I took my DPF off and had it cleaned professionally cost £300 that was a year ago no issues and the DPF light has not come on since.

Daphne, was it an easy job to get the dpf out? I recall reading somewhere that the engine needs lifting a little to get the dpf out. I'm wondering if that's the case or if I could just unbolt mine. Thanks.

It’s not to bad a job you have to unbolt the cross member underneath and loosen some bits around the DPF, my wife lifted the DPF from above while I guided it through from underneath. We didn’t lift the engine.

A simple OBD reader should be able to give you the DPF load. As long as the pressure differential sensor is working as intended, it should be more accurate than just by going by miles. As said earlier, it is very dependent on how it was driven, but also what engine oil was used, and perhaps quality of fuel used. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I use a generic ELM327 with wifi capability. I had no problems with it so far, but keep in mind, most, even the more expensive ones come from the land of the cheap.

For software there are many availably on the App Store. No affiliation with the authors, but I find Car Scanner quite a good software. It can read DPF load. I think it might be accurate enough. On my Defender it reads 40%. I connected it to a Fiesta with DPF issues, and was reading 98%. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Anyone ever heard of this? I thought it'll last until you have the _red_ DPF light.
