Hey Folks,
I'm starting to amass the gear to install my diesel heater and see that there's potentially two ways to pick up the fuel from the tank. There's a nice (but expensive) insert that fits into the filler neck and has an internal standpipe. Then there's the plastic T-piece doo-dah (cheap as chips) that fits in the return line to the tank - I think. What's the pros and cons between the two..?? Ones more than ten times the cost of the other and they both look relatively easy to install - or are they..?? π Cheers, Dave 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

Not that you are likely to but for anyone that has the tank out and wants to plan for a diesel htr the pump sender unit has an existing dip tube that you can tap into by
cutting the sealed top off and fitting your tubeπ Click image to enlarge |

I went for the option shown above into the tank through spare fitting above pump. Cheers

Superb info/advice - thank you all..ππ
The unused spur on the fuel tank sender would be the preferred/neatest option. I think a lot of folk have access panels cut into their tub floor to access the Sender - sadly not me though..π I'll most likely go for the T-piece in the fuel line - 'cos it's cheaper..!! As a follow up question; Would you mind telling me where you mounted the Pump..?? I'm going to fit my heater under the Cubby box so there'll be plenty of chassis rail to go for but I don't want to drill/tap the chassis to mount the pump... 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

There is no chassis under the cubby box, just transfer box under the seat box cover. Most people mounting their heater in this position use a dedicated box like those sold by Mud -
https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/mud-he...cUxpXAFOIp Some people cable tie the pump in place or find an unused insert. HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Thanks Mo and JST,
I've just checked the installation guide and the pump is to be no more than 300mm from the fuel line T-piece, so that will limit my options.... That's a good shout on using an existing hole. Hopefully there's one in the perfect place... πI'll use a Rivnut - ππ Cheers, Dave 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

I put a small fuel tank under the bonnet and mounted the pump to the inner wing 1999 Defender TD5 110

I mounted mine on the floor behind the front seats bulkhead. Thereβs a t piece to direct heat to the front, between the seat and cubby box and on to the back. The pipes go through the floor, thereβs a chassis rail nearby to mount the pump, the fuel line on mine is routed across the chassis, so nearby. Exhaust exits underneath but towards the outside, fixed to the tub cross member. The breather is extended to draw air from the bulkhead under the bonnet.

Thanks Gents - some further food for thought there...ππ
I've bitten the bullet and ordered a Mud Stuff Heater Box. I'll fit the heater then see where everything lays and take it from there. I was overthinking it - My spaghetti brain was just picturing my heater sat on top of a pile of spaghetti.... π Thanks to all. 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |

An alternative which FridgeFreezer on Lr4x4 has done is install a 3l catch can on the return line (petrol though). Fuel from engine goes in top, return to tank comes out the top and the fuel heater pickup is in the bottom of the can. 3l is enough to run for about 48h on his Webasto. Doesn't have to bother with the fuel tank and to refill he just drives the vehicle. Ed

Ooo, now that is a good idea..!!
Bloody hell - there's lots of good ideas with pros and cons for all. Is there any love for simply fitting one of these fittings to/from the fuel tank Sender unit - or is it rubbish..?? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/355048999519 Cheers all πππ 2002 Land Rover 110 Td5 Utility 1990 Suzuki GSXR 1100L 1980 Yamaha RD 350LC 1976 Yamaha RD 400C |
