Well it's in the V8 forum.
Revs dropping to 0 fast on the rev counter indicates ignition issues I would start there. What is 3.9 GEMS? |

Carb or injection?
As above, it sounds like it could be electrical if the engine is cutting out but will re-start. It could be a breakdown of the ignition when under-bonnet temperatures are high. I had this on an 80”. Question - have you had the vehicle a long time or have you just acquired it. The Lucas-Sagem GEMS ECU is quite a complex system. Has it been rechipped at any time? If the ECU has been rechipped in an attempt to "hide" a fault it will try to compensate for this but could well cause other faults to develop.
With the engine warm if you start the vehicle, watch the idle speed -is it normal or slightly high? If it is slightly high and then drops back to normal, this is the ECU sensing a fault and then setting the best idle speed to compensate for any fault. If this happens the fault is likely to be within the ECU. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

Hi Discomog,
I’ve had it some some time, 4+ years. I’m not aware of it being chipped, it was not sold as chipped. I’ll watch the idle speed this weekend when it’s warm. If the fault is with the ECU are there specialists who can repair? Thanks |

ATC Drivetrain UK, Bluehawk Electronics and RPI Engineering. I've not used them but these are companies that I know a number of Morgan Plus 8 owners have used for ECU testing and repair. Defender 90XS SW

Do you have access to a Nanocom to check for any fault codes? Where are you based? Defender 50th GB165

I don't know about the GEMS (I have a P38 4.6 with the Bosch system), but I would suspect your ignition coils before the ECU. |

Best person to solve GEMS issues is Mark Adams at Tornado Systems. You can buy cheap OBD2 scanners these days that will help with diagnosis rather than just changing parts and hoping for the best.
