130 TDCI fuel sender unit resistance reading
Does anyone know what the full and empty resistance readings are for a Puma 130 TDCI fuel tank sender unit?

The factory fitted tank is 75 litres, but I’ve just fitted a 135 litre tank from Long Range Automotive in Aussie and need to check what the readings are for full and empty.

The instructions that came with the tank state that the readings should be 8 ohms when full and 326 ohms when empty. When empty, I’m actually getting 875 ohms so I think that the 326 is incorrect and I haven’t tested it when full yet.

The fuel light comes on with about 19 litres left giving a reading of about 675 ohms.

Any help would be appreciated.

The instructions will be for a 2.4 or earlier. They are broadly correct readings for those senders.

2.2 sender is approx 1000 ohms empty, 50 ohms full.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks for that Martin. I think I will need to adjust the sender arm a bit as it had to be extended by 115mm to cater for the different sized tank. If the resistance reading they mention is out, then I suspect the extended distance is also out.

Fortunately, I cut out a square hole in the bed of the tub which has made things soooo much easier and means I can get to the pump/sender unit very easily.

With no diesel in the tank, the gauge actually reads slightly below empty, but if the resistance reading isn’t correct, I suspect that the “engine misfire and then cut out” system will be compromised.

Here are a couple of photos of the installed tank and tub cut out.

Just for interest, the resistance reading for my 2.2 puma sender unit out of the tank and with the arm down and at “empty”, so to speak, was 993 ohms. When moved up to the max full position, it was 50.6 ohms.

Oh, and Ive just filled up with 117.9 litres, which cost £156.69 Big Cry Mind you, at 25mpg (average) I should have a useable range of around 720 miles, although, I will probably not be filling it up to full unless I’m on a long trip.

Thank for your help in this Martin.
