Hello
I have literally just put in £19k to £25K on the trader for a 90 Station wagon and while not many come up some do. Some look lovely.. A nice silver one on 78k 2009 for £19900 (asking) so if your a cash buyer your in the right area. I agree if you had £22K there is more choice (certainly on the trader but they are only asking prices...) One thing having had small kids with a Defender if its your family holiday car, Prams, toys, Stuff kids take, bikes etc.. a 90 is tiny. Also getting kids in and out of back in a car seat a pain. 100% agree the 90 looks cooler but the 110 is so much more practical |

That is the moment where I would decide against the 90 and go 110. And I have only one 13 year old daughter who is flexible to get in and out of the rear of the car... However, throw the dog in the mix, it quickly becomes a question of transporting passengers or any goods. The 90 is just not large enough. And I fundamentally disagree with Stacey007 but the 110 is the better looking vehicle. Unless it is a soft top we're talking about, then (and only then) the 90 looks better... 1988 Land Rover OneTen County SW, 3.9l Petrol V8 (serpentine), original "Santana" LT85 gearbox |

Your aspirations seem reasonable to me. I would just say use patience and take your time looking. That way you'll get a feel for the market, understand the cars, what's right, what's wrong and the exact spec you want. Defenders are not rare so you can afford to be choosy and wait for the right one for you. The days of ridiculously climbing prices are behind us for now, so you aren't competing with that either. I would also say don't be put off by a private sale either, I question the added value that comes from buying from a dealer sometimes, especially if you can inspect a car and do your own maintenance etc. Put a wanted ad on here too. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I bought my 90 Station Wagon in 2015 so obviously had the factory fit rear seats fitted. Just for a laugh my wife and I sat in the rear seats and found it an extremely tight fit despite the fact that both of us are built like racing snakes. The thought of having to climb in the back and strap a child or two in doesn't bare thinking about. After a couple of weeks we eventually removed the rear seats and have been stored in the garage ever since. It wasn't long before I realised we should have gone for the 110 with the convenience of extra space. Defender 90XS SW

Got to echo the comments from all of the above, seriously reconsider the 90 if your moving people, especially small people and all the paraphernalia that they come with. The 110 is hands down the better family wagon.
Having had both the 110 isnt that much longer overall but the passenger convenience of the second row doors and seats is difficult to put into words. Mine started as a 7 seater, but we soon removed the 3rd row (same as the 90's 2nd row) as they took up so much space and weren't very comfortable for anyone over 4ft tall. The 110 would also open the door to the TD5 models so gives wider scope to find your perfect vehicle 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

"The worst Defender you buy is your first one" Mike from Britannica Restorations
&list=PLkIBI0td6S2vGpRBLzSY2OJxU53faLFvk&t=3s Mine was mechanically sound when I bought it and there were a few cosmetic problems that I thought would be easy to fix, turns out sometimes it's not as easy or as cheap as you thought. It's only with ownership that you understand what the issues are and what hidden problems you didn't notice in your excitement to buy, or the Road Tax. I thought about a 90 as dealer had one in my price range, the idea was that it would be a holiday car and camping/ Green Road vehicle for taking my sons out. Having sat in the back of a 90 on the rear seats it became very clear that it was not going to fit our needs and a 110 would be the way to go. Kids in the back of a 90 doesn't leave a lot of space for anything else but then there is always roof racks and roof boxes. Hi, one thing to add is that the early tdci station wagons will sit in the top ved band in case that's a concern for you.

Wow thank you for the honest replies!
I am still a little while off making the plunge, so I'll do a bit more research and make sure all our needs are met. Yes, I agree that I could up the finance bracket, I'm just cautious of going too deep and then having problems 3-4 months in, but that is the case for any car, so I just need to be sensible with my choice. I hope to join the fold soon! |

Just to lob a grenade in, but on that budget I’d buy a euro 6 Discovery 4.

Just to add,
I've almost had my defender 10 years, its been all over UK, Lands End to John o Grouts, NC500, Orkney and then European trips to Annecy. In that time apart from regularly servicing it, Its needed brakes / pads, wheel bearing, pan rod arm, nothing particularly expensive. When something needs changing I generally upgrade it The BIGGEST cost to owning a Defender if it were a 90 or 110 are all the options and add on's you can buy... there are still things I look at for mine. Tax wize mine is 2009 so I think around £600 (high) however I 'could' sell in now for more than I bough it 10 years ago and anyway its so good when I drive it well worth it I'm lucky now I have a selection of cars but it was my daily for 5 years or so. Mine started life pretty much standard like this.. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2...mp;fromsra Just as a side note Have you driven one, as they are not everyone's cupa, I swapped at the time a Mercedes E class estate for mine, never looked back |

Have a 90 station wagon, rear is incredibly small. Have 2 kids, but they have grown pretty well out of their baby car seat. Its ok for an errand, but even a larger supermarket shopping list, you will soon find there is no space. Luckily my 90 is not my daily, and more of my toy, so still fine by me. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I ran a TD5 90 Hardtop from new to twice round the clock, my son sat in the middle front seat until he was seventeen (then he drove it himself) was used as a daily driver and also three-up for camping in south west France

With a 110, you can get in the rear seats from the middle doors - the seats tip forward.
My 1st 110 (after a 90) had previously been owned by someone who had transported adult rugby players. That said, I always travel in the driver's seat! |
