Give Paul Foley a ring, he has direct knowledge of Defenders in Africa, Foleys still have an operation in Kenya, run now I think by Paul’s son. I did have a chat with Stuart foley about this as we are going to travel down the west coast of Africa in a TD5 and his advice was a TD5 will be fine, just have a few spare filters to change regularly. From what I remember about our conversation they do recommend a pre filter for the puma engine.

a few kits over the internet, leaving the OE filter as prefilter (5um) and a final 2um filter. Puma 110" SW

I have seen some large tractors with two fuel filters side by side. I have heard it said that the Defender might not be able to draw the fuel through the two filters so just check that out. You can fit a sedimenter in line. It is a glass bowl type filter that traps water and will extend the life of the diesel filter. My series 111 2.25 diesel has one so they must have been standard fit at one time.

you want a sedimentor between filter/tank you can get twin ones too for extra security - get a glass bottom so you can see into it and fit in engine bay and not onto chassis. so its better protected.
