Defender 2.4 intermittent starting issue
Around 3 months ago my starter motor burnt out. I changed it for a Denso starter, all was fine for a few weeks. Then my ignition switch went. Heater wouldn’t come on when starting. So since changing both for new genuine parts i have had this recurring issue when starting sometimes. We are currently travelling through France, we’ve done around 900 miles and its happened twice.

Basically theres no ignition at start. Battery is new and holding charge. Battery cables are in sound order so is the earth. I have tried to knock the starter motor (incase of a dead spot-no luck).

The only way i’ve been able to get it to crankIs if i put the keys and turn to the position before ignition , crawl under the vehicle and bridge the starter motor terminals with my long handle ractchet. I don’t keep the ratchet there, its there for maybe half a second. Then go back to truck and turn the key to igntion. Its starts…

I thought it may be a dead spot on the starter? Terminal nuts are tight.

Anyone who has previous knowledge of a fault like this, your advice would be greatly appreciated

Mine does the same. I have no solution but playing with the fob a few times seems to fix the problem. I tend to think it is a weak connection in one of those plugs at the center behind the dash (maybe I am talking BS). Puma 110" SW

Thanks for the quick reply MK! I don’t have a remote fob. Standard key

IIRC some users extend an earth cable to the bellhousing. Not sure if it helps. Puma 110" SW

Thanks MK. Just check out a few posts on this forum and found the 30aml fuse under the driver seats. It was blown so changed that. Not sure whats causing it to blow. Still not 100% confident ive fixed the issue as it didnt blow a fuse the other day when i crossed the terminals on the starter
