2.4 TDCi water pump blanking plug/cap
Does anyone know a sensible source of a replacement blanking cap for the unused water connector on the 2.4 Puma water pump, the LR part number is PYB500040?

I've just removed my water pump because it appears to be leaking enthusiastically. Positioned where it is, it is completely impossible to see where the leak is coming from until the pump is removed, and I find that the crappy little rubber/plastic cap on the unused vertical port on the plastic manifold on the back of the pump has split. To my surprise, a B***part replacement is around £45 and a genuine one is a stonking £103. For a plastic thing the size of a large thimble this is simply taking the you-know-what. It's more than a new water pump (which comes without the cap) and more than a new water manifold (which also comes without the cap).

The same part is used on the TD5 where it is described as an "oil cooler plug cap".

I don't know if there is a Ford equivalent, it may be on the Transit that the port is used for something.

If anyone has found a sensible alternative, I would love to hear it. I am about to go to try to buy some 22mm ID coolant hose so that I can make up a short hose with a plug in the end.

Recently had mine changed because of a similar water leak. Just paid the Britpart price and fitted a new Borg & Beck water pump. Peace of mind for the next 5-10 years again I guess. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

An update, after some further googling, which may be of use to others in the same predicament.

Firstly I have found these Samco Silicone Blanking Caps which appear to be designed for exactly this purpose and are a modest £13.96 +VAT. Much more reasonable.

Secondly, although the part number I quoted above was from Microcat and no supersession is noted, I have found a different part number LR043268 which seems to be the same part, but is a sensible £9.65 +VAT, a rather more credible price. Even B***part lists the two as separate parts, with a similar lower price for this one, and the parts in the images look the same! It is most inexplicable.

Thirdly, and finally for now, I have also found this Twinwoods 4x4 TD5 Silicone Oil Cooler Blanking Plug which is £5.95 inc VAT. and si specifically described as a substitute for the absurdly-priced PYB500040.

So it would seem that there are options which don't necessitate selling a kidney, but unfortunately none is likely to get me back on the road by Monday. For that I have improvised, a short length of heater hose over the unused spigot with a plug of mild steel held n the end with a Jubilee(R) clip.

I hope that this info may save someone else some cash in due course.

What is it about it that makes you curious?

Below is a picture of the waterpump/vacuum pump assembly showing the plastic water manifold on the back of the pump. The port which extends upwards behind the main outlet port (the outlet of course is the alloy one on the actual pump body) is not used and capped off on the Defender, I am not sure about the transit. The other three inlet ports are used.

It is almost impossible to see when the engine is assembled since it is obscured by the mass of hoses in the area. Even with many removed (lower picture) it is still invisible. It is not until the pump is removed from the engine that you can see if it is leaking.

After yet more spendiness I can confirm firstly that the Samco Silicone Blanking Caps at £13.96 +VAT fit perfectly and are a satisfactory alternative to the original part.

Secondly part number LR043268 at £9.65 +VAT appears to be identical in every respect except price to PYB500040 at £103 +VAT and fits perfectly. I recommend the use of this part for both TDCi and Td5 applications.

Would it be possible not to close this outlet, but to connect it to the other feed pipes using a T-piece/Y-piece in order to increase the cross-section and reduce the pressure losses? Would there be enough space and would this even make sense or would it just be a gimmick?

Given that the engine is designed to operate without it and does so without any particular issue I'd suggest it would be a waste of time.and it would add more potential leaky points. There isn't a problem to fix.

I have the 2.2l and I seem to remember when I had the cooling hoses adrift there was a connector that sat just behind the water pump.. It was attached to the pump inlet by a very short hose.. It accepted the top radiator hose and I think the outlet of the oil cooler..
I think my pump inlet has a blanked off connector... So I was left wondering why the connector was there given the top radiator hose could be attached directly to the pump inlet where this connector attached anyway, and the oil cooler outlet could connect directly to the blanked water pump inlet connection.. Doing away with that connector..
Its a job on my to do list, to have another look at it and see if what I'm on about is possible?

Borg & Beck pump on mine, just as good as genuine I think LR’s is over priced frankly.
IIRC Approx 3x the price, and this is providing you fit yourself.

Good find BW with the blacking cap, I know the one that you mean.
I used to have an old pump lying around with a spare blanking plug on the plastic manifold, I git rid of it though as the manifold was leaking anyway.
