but if you think of a manual transmission, by pushing the lever forwards into 1st gear, the selector forks are moving backward to select a gear at the back of the transmission.... |

Absolutely! Just one more nugget to nibble on, tho: the very large majority of American cars have been delivered with automatic transmissions since the late 1950s. There is not a huge difference in the way a 1950s torque converter operates (at idle in D) to the new torque converter in your L663. Have you ever heard of American auto boxes being unreliable? Along with the big V8s they're amongst the best things ever to come out of a US factory. And trust me in this respect as I am American: nobody (absolutely nobody) shifts to N or P at a stop - unless they need to unwrap a Big Mac or are having issues with piping hot coffee or similar RRC 2Dr, RRC 4Dr, P38, and 2 L322s, 2 FL1s and a L663 on the way |

American also don't know what hand brakes are. They call them e-brake as in emergency brake, which really is questionable. On most older cars they are some sort of pedal, never used. Man, did they miss out on the hot hatch hand brake turns, same with the current young drivers.
I lived in the US for several years, driving is a very different thing there, boring I would say, but with longer distances you just sit and wait till you get there, understandable comfort is important. European traffic is a lot more diverse and engaging. Watching the Arc de Triomf roundabout is just pure entertainment. Each there own, I was always hunting down some quirky manual Jeep, trying to spice up the experience a little. Now in Europe I have a mix of manual and automatic and really both have their own benefits. |
