Big mystery solved
The circular recess in the cover on the Puma engine cover is for an oil separator like a catch can. Ford fit it to their versions of the 2.4. It looks like the engine filter housing inverted. I was looking at a Ford Transit 2.4 this morning and noticed this .The mechanic told me what it was. Pity Land Rover did not fit it to their version of the engine. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Afraid not. The mechanic had the bonnet up on the Transit and I was looking at the engine. Where the circular recess on my 2.4 is there was an inverted thing like my 2.4 oil filter housing. I asked what it was and that is what I was told. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I’m pretty sure the part Spud meant is the engine cover part which is commonly and affectionately nicknamed the cup holder on the engine cover of a Puma. (It looks like a circular dish, around the size of a large cup or mug, or the oil filter housing without the filter housing present but inverted.

If there is a catch can on the Transit with the same motor, then I can’t see why it couldn’t be moved over.
Perhaps it was bonnet clearance? Maybe that is the issue?
I would have thought it was close to the bonnet /hood in that area.

I think some members on here have a catch can, but not specifically located there. No Guts, No Glory.

not sure if you are referring to the centrifugal oil cleaner that the ford transit 2.4 l engine has..it sits on the top of the engine in the cover and easily accessed..

England 2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Java Black
It was fitted to the higher power 2.4 pumas in the Transit, 140bhp I believe, exactly the same rotor filter as a Td5.

I bought the cover and put it on. You can find the part on LRWorkshop. In this case it just makes your engine a tad different looking but I like it.
