2.4 engine rattle - solved
Need some advice. Have spent quite some time reading here already.

My 2010 2.4 has a rattle.

It’s on 90k miles and has been a serviced on time always.

It comes and goes depending on how I am driving.

Noise on acceleration - slight rattle
Full throttle - no noise
Light throttle/maintaining road speed - noisy

Sounds like tappets on an old A series engine

Pulls very well
No visible smoke

Fuel economy - normal
Oil consumption - about 0.5ltr per 1000 miles - more than any other defender I have had - could it be turbo related?

Had new LOF clutch fitted and output shaft last week, This is now silent and am thinking the noise isn’t new but was masked by the clutch spring noise

Options:-

Check injectors - seal and washer kit is cheap enough. Can I get them bench tested?

Change/service any that are faulty

VCV and pump learn was done last month - but could do again

Check for heat shield rattle - around the turbo

Check the cat/exhaust isn’t rattling

What checks can I do on the cylinder head? Can I detect wear on the rockers?

Last option is a remanufactured engine - is it worth trying a remanufactured head?

I am working abroad - not many options for getting mechanical help here other than main dealer. Their normal approach is just to change expensive stuff till it works.

Any help with self diagnosis greatly appreciated. Am quite handy with the spanners but don’t have access to any specialist tools other than my trusty BB nano.

Thanks in advance

Plug it in and see if there is any codes, but definitely check the turbo heat shield.

Is there any exhaust rattles anywhere? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Mine does something similar (275k miles and nearly all engine parts are original). I suspect it is injector related since adding an injector treatment alters (but doesn't eliminate it).

There is no evidence to suggest that my injectors are loose, but they are undoubtedly worn since each must have discharged over 2500 gallons of fuel through an exceptionally tiny orifice. I have a new set but haven't got around to fitting them yet.

BW - Please could you kindly let us know how that goes in future, as it’s always good to know these things.
I’d imagine it’s perhaps a slightly altered injector spray pattern, though the pressure is to spec.
I guess even with live diagnostics the pressure would show as roughly correct but the spray pattern not so good.
It’s not something that you can really tell unless it’s professionally checked due to the incredibly high pressures concerned so DIY isn’t an option for safety sake.
I’d imagine the spray pattern is atomised to a circular pattern, however, perhaps over time this goes sideways a little or oval perhaps.

Though off topic, so far so good with the Transit 4x4 clutch, I like it it’s a little heavier in a good way, less slip, and performs well.
I’ve not long changed the engine oil, with some nice Castrol C1 professional and genuine service kit.
Next on the list is diff oils, and then carefully the transfer box and gearbox.
I shall get the brake fluid done for me and clutch fluid.

Does anyone think that magnetic diff / transfer box plugs are worth it? Or best just to stick with standard? IIRC, the diffs on mine had standard non mag plugs on, I’ve not touched the rest before to look as I’ve had it serviced for me.
I’m glad to finally do it myself as it helps to have the extra knowledge, only some jobs I’d rather not have to do simply because they are a pain like bleeding the clutch but all the same, it’s good to have the knowledge and it’s good to see new members here also wishing to gain a wealth of knowledge. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Magnetic diff drain plugs are worth it, they are not expensive and catch any fine metal particles to stop them circulating around the diff , plus any larger ones that trigger you to investigate where they have come from.

I’m pretty sure the transfer box drain plug is already a magnetic drain plug.

I believe the MT82 gearbox already has a magnet in its base, however I still fitted a magnetic drain plug to that as well.

Sorry for the thread hijack.
Yes, I did think the transfer box had a mag drain plug as standard, but, wasn’t sure if LR commonly fitted them.
I am sure my diffs don’t have mag plugs on though, as I had a look at them last time.

Does anyone happen to have any links to an MT82 mag drain plug?
I may as well get one, as it’s not something that you can change over whenever. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

All my magnetic drain plugs are from xcess4x4 but if they are out of stock then Gwyn Lewis usually have them. Most of the LR parts specialists also sell magnetic plugs but I’m not sure which brands they stock. WARNING.

Thank you - Gwyn Lewis does a kit for the diffs and transfer box I believe.
Not sure about the MT82 though.

LR also do genuine parts diff plugs. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

TYB500120 is the magnetic diff plugs. If they are not fitted before, beware of your first oil change, they will pick up a lot of debris from normal wear of the diffs.

Regarding transfer box, this has a magnetic plug already, however if I do not know the vehicle (ie I have not driven it exclusively prior to service), I remove the output / PTO cover (six bolts) and inspect the bearing carrier for debris - for some reason when the centre diff is abused, causing the bronze thrust washers to wear / disintegrate, the bronze debris always ends up collecting under the PTO cover. Obviously the magnetic drain plug will not show any bronze particles or debris.

Just to add, the xcess4x4 plugs are seriously powerful. Knowing Gwyn, his will be decent too. LR ones are not. WARNING.

Check the heat shield. Some times the bolts loosen and it will rattle under acceleration. Happened to me. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Or the heat shield can get a little deformed even with fixings as they should be, then it gets very close and can vibrate.
I had a look at mine today as I was there anyway, and all, the fixings were secure but the shield was a bit close, a bit close to the turbo and has headed downward towards the floor.
Just bent it a little more up carefully and it was a lot lot better.

I’d imagine it often gets confused with the gear stick weights rattle.

I think Gwyn’s mag diff plugs will come out on top. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
