Had mine for about a month now and whilst the purist probably won't want to hear it (or believe it), I'm surprised at how special the 90, at least in hardtop format, feels to drive. The charm and unstoppable feel of the L316, at least in my opinion, has been retained.
Great photo and nice to see the two together. PS - Lightning, please tell me you were getting a kebab, pizza and/or burger!  |

Here's my new & old, one 1998 and one 2022 although I'm sure somebody on here called us misguided yuppies for buying the newer one
I have to say at 60+ I may be too old to be a misguided yuppy but I'm not sure on the qualifications needed to be a yuppy

ok, look at it rationally. Which bits of design language from the old model does the new one share? Modular body - nope flat sided panels - nope, they are all curvy on the new one Flat wing tops - completely missing on the new one Bumperless rear end - new one has a wrap around plastic rear bumper stepped separate front bumper - nope, new ones has a HUGE plastic wrap around fair Round headlights - Nope not got these either Separate indicator/side/rear lights - integrated Round indicator/side/rear lights - nope square and/or integrated Body capping - nope Pitched roof - curved roof solid no spoke steel rims - D spoke rims Flat windscreen - curved highly raked windscreen Fold down windscreen - nope Front vents and distinct bulkhead design - clamshell bonnet up to the windscreen, so no not present on the new one Offset square rear numberplate - centrally mounted rectangle one Apart from having 4 wheels and a 2 box design, there really is very little in common between the two designs. This does not mean a person likes or dislikes one or the other..... The 'only' Land Rover designs traits are the rear mounted spare wheel, side opening tailgate and alpine lights. But they look more Discovery than Defender. In fact the Discovery also has wrap around bumpers, integrated and square lights, non round headlights, a bonnet bulge, no wing tops, a similarly raked windscreen and quite a few other design details that match up far closer with the new Defender. Even the steel wheel design from the D2 looks more akin to the current white 18" steelies. |

I can see the logic. The new Defender is in front of an Indian takeaway as befitting the current owners of JLR, whereas the slightly tired classic Defender minus the rear mounted spare wheel is situated in front of a charity shop. šš |

l think it's a great photo. The old Defender is standing tall, having done 20 years of hard service already.
l love my Defender (the new one in the photo is mine) but will it still be going in 20 years? The old one will likely still look the same, unless the farmer who owns it washes it between now and then (unlikely) |
