Heater box and control cable issues
Just replaced my broken heater control unit. A fiddly job (is there a special tool for the clips that hold the cable sheaths to the unit?).

Two questions:

The ‘blue’ heat control wire shown on one photo travels very close to the right hand control wheel- should it be routed/ cable tied to the metal frame behind (where circled) to keep it clear of the other controls?

A stiff ‘red’ wire was the cause of the previous breakage of the control unit I think. This wire controls the bottom flap on the heater box. I thought the flap was jammed (likely with a .22 case) but after a bit of working the gears directly (shown circled on the other pic- example lifted from the net) they came free and the cable and control now works as it should, but stiff. Can these gears be lubricated- and what best to do that with? Are there other internal gears here as well?

Very usefully the cables are colour coded with tape flags- essential for correct relocation!

You can zip tie those cables just clear of rubbing on anything, just don’t bend them too much of an angle or the braided cable inside can jam and bend back on it’s self, rather than going back up the outer sheath.

I used silicone grease on the parts there, it helps a lot, anything else thicker will gum up.
You can grease every moving part, it’s worth doing.
You might want to use disposable gloves agd sone kitchen paper towel or blue roll as it can get all over the place. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Silicone grease- think I have some. Is that the same stuff plumbers use on O rings etc?

Yes, clear grease, it is quite slick and doesn’t get thickened too much.
Lithium would be a bit thicker imho. Jam up a little in the cold. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️
