Fuel consumption in thick sand
This is a difficult question to answer, but here goes anyway.

Does anybody know how much your fuel consumption drops when driving in really soft sand, like the desert/beach sand? I’m trying to calculate how much fuel I need to carry to cover a minimum of 1000km or 621 miles? (No fuel stops during this stage)

Car in question is a PUMA 110, 2.4 running BFG tyres and loaded with all the normal overlanding gear. Currently I’m getting approximately 29mpg on the road. So will this halve or be a lot worse?

There are so many variables it is an impossible question to answer. A laden vehicle on deep soft sand , it wouldn't surprise me if it dropped to 5mpg.

How soft? How laden? BFGs (even though you don't say what type) aren't sand tyres so won't be ideal.

I would be very careful and take local advice and also check consumption before you pass the point of no return.

I have done a bunch of sand driving (beach and desert). This is hard on man and machine. You need a lot of focus, it's not fast and with the extra load and low speed, not to mention typical hot environment, your cooling system needs to be top notch.

Personally I never worried too much about range. Start with a full tank and limit your time in the sand. Are you going to cross a desert you are worried about range?
