There should be no issue at all washing your engine. Just don't go crazy with the high pressure washer on the electrical connections etc.

Obviously the outside does not do anything for what is happening inside, but physiologically a nice clean engine bay, makes for nicer car, certainly nicer to work on and also easier to spot any potentially trouble like any fluid leak.

I wash the engine bay of all my cars least twice a year. Just use a strong water based engine de-greaser and follow the instruction. Maybe some brake cleaner and a rag for the really greasy spots. Obviously if you wash regularly it is easier to keep it looking good.

I do not use any water or snow foam under pressure or in high volumes in the engine bay. I.e I don’t use a pressure washer. ECU’s, sensors and connectors will not like it.

What specifically are you looking to clean, bulkhead, chassis, engine etc.

Better to use a hand pumped sprayer ( garden ones with a lance are great at getting into tight spaces ) to target specific areas and filled with a degreaser diluted correctly. Agitate with a soft brush then rinse with the sprayer filled with clean water.

Bilt hamber Surfex-HD is a great degreaser.

On painted surfaces you can snow-foam using the sprayer bottle, bilt hamber snow foam can be used in this way.

Being a HGV Technician since 2002 and always washed off engine bays with a pressure washer, don't go mad on the electrical items and it'll be fine.

In the winter when the local lanes are just rivers of mud, I regularly snow foam and rinse the bodywork to get the thickest on the muck off. I also rinse around the chassis and suspension.

I had not thought about using snow foam on the engine bay, good idea. As others have already mentioned just don't hold the lance too close to any electrical bits and bobs.

I’ve washed wifey’s Velar with snow foam including the engine bay.

When washing it off (engine) I always remove the lance from the Karcher jet wash and just wash it off with the trigger part. It fans the water out and softens the flow.

Then a wipe down with a lint free cloth then a spray over with GT85 ( the engine, not me Laughing )

Also when washing the TD5, after drying I go over the body work with GT85, its comes up a treat and cheaper than Autoglym I use on the wife’s Velar.

Spray it onto a lint free cloth first to keep it off the glass.

I've always used the Bilt Hamber cleaning stuff, their snow foams got some decent anti corrosion formulation in it as well.

I also use Clorox salt neutraliser on our cars in the winter.
