R380 trouble with 3rd ans 4th gear after rebuild
Have run into a somewhat substantial issue during my 110's rebuild today. I rebuilt the gearbox whilst it was out using quality parts from Ashcroft. When i reassembled, everything seemed to go okay and seemed to be able to select gears on the bench.

Now i have the body back on and the engine running, i can get 1st and 2nd gear fine with the engine on/off, likewise with 5th gear. Reverse is a little notchy but goes in okay

3rd and 4th gear are the issue though. If i try and select them, sometimes they click in perfectly, other times they just wont go in (engine on or off and no grinding when pushing the lever). It is almost like something is blocking the selector. I dont believe it is the bias springs as when it does go in fine the lever moves cleanly between 3rd and 4th.

Does anyone have any ideas at all what else i can check?

It has has a new 3rd gear, new synchros and a new 3rd/4th synchro hub so i hope that isnt the issue.

Hi Steve

Since the gearbox was selecting gears OK on the bench and as you have used a new 3rd gear, synchro rings and hub it sounds like either things are just a little tight (a little new) or perhaps the clutch pedal is not quite disengaging the clutch enough for a smooth gear change.

How many miles have you covered since the rebuild?

Not done any miles at all yet. Its currently not even moved - just running through the gears with the transfer box in neutral.

Ah ok. Do not worry just yet. When ready go for a drive, it is the only real way to check as the transmission has load and is spinning much quicker. I did find that when I rebuilt my R380 it was noticably more positive in the gear change than it had ever been before it exploded.

Did you assemble with ATF or something thicker? If ATF it could just be new components and a lack of lubrication as the oil is not circulating.

Have you adjusted the bias on the turret Steve? You’ll probably need to if you’ve rebuilt the box to get it to shift nicely in those gears.

Thanks both!

I didnt think it was the bias springs as when it is working fine it goes straight between 3rd/4th without any wiggling. I had a play with the spring on Sunday and it made no discernable difference unfortunately. I have purchased a new turret as my current one does have a little wear around the spring pin slot but i dont think this is the issue.

Will reassess once it is on the road in a few weeks (hopefully)!

Hi Steve,

as above, i suspect its either just the new 3/4 hub thats tight or possibly the bias if you find it shifts better when you move the lever to the left or right of where it wants to go,

give it 1000 miles before you do anything, I suspect the 3/4 hub will loosen up

To close this one out, vehicle now has about 250miles on it since the rebuild and the gearbox has eased up so 3rd and 4th gear selection is great Thumbs Up
