United Kingdom 1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Coniston Green
TD5 lumpy at high RPM
Hi All, I'm new to this forum and owning a Defender.

I bough my 1999 110 TD5 129000 miles in March and unfortunately a few of the most recent from the 5 previous owners have done very little mileage and even less maintenance so I inherited a bit of a project although thankfully someone at some point had looked after this car enough for the repairs now to be known common faults but plentiful.
It has had a judder from owning it in March, so to resolve I have done the following which has reduced it down.

Re-bushed suspension with Bearmarch polly bushes kit.
Replaced intercooler as originally had split down the middle.
Replaced engine oils, transfer, gearbox and final drive/axle.
Replaced injector harness as it had oil on ECU connectors.
Free'd up the turbo wastegate.
Replaced both prop shafts(significantly improved after front shaft but both had play on UJs and splines)
Hand brake binding so adjusted and cleaned. I have found the drum will catch at a certain point unless handbrake adjuster fully unwound.

Following all of this, it now has more like a slight thump thump thump under the clutch peddle that increases with the revs, if I tow or hold it in gear or get to 70mph that thump thump gets worst until it's more like a judder felt through the car. I'm thinking it's a crankshaft pulley as that squeeks when shutting down the car or the DMF and I can get that to judder when towing if underpowered bringing the clutch up. I'm not sure on either/all or something else.
I can get it to do the same on the drive out of gear if I gradually rev it to a certain point maybe approx 3k rpm.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated or something I have missed?

Thanks

Chris

I would begin with the crankshaft pulley for 1, they can cause some interesting rough running. Check the injector balancing as this could highlight the ECU trying to balance out the poorly crankshaft pulley.

Are you sure the wastegate is completely free?

Hi I was thinking possibly the wastegate, but it was very loose once I had worked it free. I'll go back for a second look anyway as it's easy enough to check.
The crankshaft pulley is on the to-do list, it's telling me something isn't quite right everytime I shut it off.

Thanks
