1997 County 300TDI engine issues - help please

hello, im new to the defender world and recently bought a 1997 defender county with 12 months mot, 196k miles and ran like a dream. Then it all went wrong, it started to loose power and stall, losing power steering and all power. When i try to start it it blows white or dark smoke from the exhaust and when i press the accelerator there it doesn't rev, just splutters and stalls. Its been in the local old land rover specialist garage 4 times and has had the following work done.
1, checked fuel system for leaks and fitted new filter to pump pipe ass, fitted new fuel filter, 2 fitted new fuel lift pump and cleaned out lines & tank, direct wire from ignition to fuel to bypass immobiliser, fitted another fuel filter. When they work on it and take for a test drive its fine. I get it back and the next day its stalling, if i wait 10 minutes it starts and drives ok. Collected from last repair last friday, drove for 1 hour and all good, drove 25 miles Saturday and then stalled, waited 10 minutes and all good. The last time that i took it for repair it stalled all the 2 mile journey and i crawled at 5 mile an hour... Im desperate for help as its spent more time in the garage than on the road.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

I appreciate you are desperate to get this sorted.

I imagine you have invested heavily in the repairs already completed.. therefore I would be back at the garage insisting they help you
Surely they would want you to drive away happy with their work.
I’d pop back and politely explain that it’s not acceptable

Have you looked in the tank? I have seen it when a new tank was fitted and there was a label inside the tank that wasn't removed. This would get sucked onto the fuel line blocking it and then when stopped if would fall back down. Got to be worth a look, if you take the sender out the top you should be able to see. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Thanks Clemmo, to be fair the garage is miffed withe problem and havent charged me for much of the work done.

thanks Dave, its the original tank, they drained it and cleared all of the gunk out and also found silicone, they then put a new fuel filter in but still not fixed.

The Tdi fuel system is fairly simple.

To me it sounds like an air leak still. With the bonnet open, have the vehicle running, rev it up a few times and shut the engine off, then stick your ear in the engine bay by the filter and pump and listen for any hissing.

A new lift pump is cheap and easy to swap, so worth trying. I'd also be tempted just to tweak the filter a little tighter as they can leak (suck in air) around the seal if not done properly.

In theory it could be an injector pump issue, but less likely.

If you are prepared to have a go yourself at doing bits it'll be a lot cheaper long run than getting a garage to do it.
