two pairs of mole grips each side of the UJ and see if you have any play? or remove it completely for a better look?
If you can get Debbie M to assist good luck. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have just had this, it started at the beginning of this week and i managed to get to my indy today so he could have a look, it turned out to be the new drop arm link, which i had to have for the mot, it was slightly lose, wobbled a bit, due to the paint wearing off, he said that they can do this, so he tightened it up and now it's all good Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Im just looking for some advice on the same subject.

I have a 2009 tdci done around 72,000 which has play in the steering.

I have replace the following components over the past two years

Radius arm bushes, drop arm ball joint, steering lower uj, track rod end ball joints, steering damper, wheel bearing.

I adjusted the steering box and have had the tracking done. None of theses seemed to make any improvement.

I took it to a specialist landrover mechanics who couldn’t seem to find any problem apart from a loose wheel bearing which when fixed seemed to make no improvement.

The only thing I believe to still be the culprit would be the steering box itself…. Should this need replacing at such mileage?

Have you compared to another Defender. Steering on a Defender is not exactly precise, especially compared to modern cars. It is also normal to have considerable play once the steering is off center. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
