Optimill quick boss plus 350 steering wheel.
Just asking if this is a worthwhile mod, alongside the security shroud gizmo that Optimill do.

Quite a lot of money so any more feedback is welcomed. I have a Td5, (48 spline if any one has one to shift?!)

Many thanks

Rob

I have the optimil steering boss with a momo tuner. Glad I did it as it gives the impression of more elbow room etc. I haven't got the security cover though. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Thanks for replies.
Security cover for boss seems to be getting very favourable reviews. Would mean I can ditch the disclock..!

First thing I ordered for mine the day I went to pick it up.

And how glad I was as someone screwdrivered the drivers door the first week I owned it.

Probably opportunist looking for tools / contents more than anything but I can sleep easy knowing that even if I left the thing completely unlocked, it ain’t going anywhere.

That combined with a ‘ardcase is, I’m hoping, going to suitably foil most.

For me the optimill stuff is very hit and miss, the doors handles for instance are appalling for the money, but the steering wheel boss and lock thingy is an absolute must although the lock thing is an arse to put on, trying to line up the holes is a thing of nightmares.

When you put the swivel lock on, put your finger on the "top" hole. Look for the "top" lug on the steering wheel boss and when putting it on feel for top lug on your finger nail. Works for me 95% of the time and it really isn't a pain to fit anymore. Saves a lot of cursing as just trying to lign it up is tricky as you put it on but the centre section is free to move so unless you have it spot on it turns - with your finger on the hole it stops it spinning.

Ha - this is a good little trick - did have me cursing the first time I tried to fit it!

with the locking lug at 3 o'clock( swivel lock) put a small piece of tape at 12 o'clock it should line up with the top hole, you then line up the tape with the top lug on the steering boss, works for me

I just look where the "Top" pin is on the boss, (top centre of course if wheels were straight ahead) and then quick glance inside the swivel to find the equivalent hole and then just marry them together. Goes on first time 99% of the time, other 1% just needs a slight wiggle.

Takes 10 times longer to explain in writing than to actually do.

I'm afraid I simply don't understand how anyone can have the slightest difficulty fitting the Optimill lock, it could hardly be simpler.

I've just fitted the Optimill QR boss and I also have the security cover. Also, no issues at all for me fitting the security cover. Very neat solution.

Question for those that have it - when you park away from home, what do you do with the steering wheel? Do you secure it somewhere in the truck?

It depends. If I'm staying in a hotel, then I take the wheel in with me. If I'm going on a hike, I hide the wheel out of sight.

For extra security you could securely attach the wheel to something inside the Defender with a bicycle type lock. Belt and braces.
