Do you know which engin is in it? I am sure each will have their own nuances but with the engine type I am sure the guys on here will be able to give you good advice.
If you are not sure then a photo of the engine would help. Also, if he has a few diesel defenders then he may have ones with different engine types. One engine may be more suited to your planned use than others. I am relatively new to defenders and mechanics myself so not one to offer the best advice, but I have a 300tdi and try and stick to 55-60 mph, but that's more to maximise fuel efficiency. Hope you get the advice you need and good luck with your search. |

Nonsense - you cannot wear out an engine just by driving it long distances at 65mph. If anything long drives are better for wear than many short ones. I’ve driven my 200Tdi all day on motorways on numerous occasions and it hasn’t spontaneously combusted
Noisy and unrefined though, and in the land of ridiculously cheap petrol I’d get a V8! |

The dealer doesn't know what he is talking about.
I'm on holiday driving through France and on some days have driven my TD5 for 8 hours with just a couple of brief stops. I have a friend with me driving his 300tdi and both trucks are fine having done over 2000 miles so far. As far as speed is concerned we're doing 60 to 70 mph for long periods so no issues there. As long as the vehicle is mechanically sound and is serviced regularly and has the right oil etc it will be fine. Slap wear the engine Codswallop...! Agree with Retro. Having regularly commuted in a 200tdi and done many long long haul trips in one I can happy say that it had no problem at all cruising at 70mph, especially with the 1:1.2 LT230 transfer box in it. As Retro says it actually does engines good to do long drives. EDIT: I have been a prat Last edited by geobloke on 13th Jul 2023 8:59am. Edited 1 time in total |

Just another salesman making stuff up to fill the vacuum of humanity and intellect around their own orbit.
However - on fuel prices I'd be delighted if I could get a litre of petrol for 69p/litre, less than half what it is now and the last time it was that price the year probably began with a 19! I'd still be fairly chuffed at 97p in California. JB @Lodelaner Instagram Youtube greenlaning and other LR related content |

I have done 250K on my 200tdi, currently the engine has done about 330K in all.
It cruises at 60mph and feels comfortable, plus has enough to accelerate to over 70 when overtaking. I am concerned at the long livability of the engine especially as 200tdi heads are becoming harder to get. I think if it had loads of emissions stuff and a bank of computers to manage it it may last longer! Returned 27mpg on a 1600 mile tour of Ireland last year. so yes I am very concerned that I'm not going to get my monies worth out of it, typical Land Rover. |

Gosh - you've clearly bought a lemon. Have you tried calling Land Rover to reject it? 😜 JB

last time I went to the dealers to buy a part they asked me to park round the back as it was causing to much interest.
They are not interested in my complaints as it is a proper Land Rover 110 not a Defender!!!! |

Maybe there is a confusion with the predecessor of the 200tdi engine?

Are you sure he is not referring to the driver wearing out from noise and discomfort?

55 to 65 mph is ideal in any of them.

I recently did 3 consecutive 10 hour driving days at 65mph twice in 2 weeks going to and coming back from Morocco in my TD5 with no issues at all. Properly serviced and maintained they are perfectly capable albeit with a slightly newer engine than the ‘91 model mentioned.
