Ahhh Manual choke on a small outboard engine, that was my introduction to them!
I knew how to start the dinghy engine no bother at all back when I was knee high to a grasshopper, I honestly don't think I'd remember now! you never lived! If you have not owned or drove a car with a manual choke. my very 1st car, a Rover metro had a one, My dad had to push the thing all the way in, by the time i approached the a rounder about, down the road there. Due to it wanting to run away on me, while i was turning right. The thing used to hate it, when my dad did that. It really shows you how things have really changed since 2000s, now its not often that you hear cars that are NA. A kid i was talking to at work, has a fiesta, with twin pipes on. Sounds crap, i told him that too. he is only 19. We had a bit of a chat, and i was surprised that his fiesta was NA, most of those i believe were turboed by then. 406s (and the 405s before ‘em) were as rugged as many a 4x4 and boy did we use and abuse them. Taking an “unauthorised” route over the Golan I crashed over one rock too many, knew immediately it was a bad one and stopped. Sump holed, engine oil gone, could be in trouble. An old farmer came along with his truck (you might think you’re alone in the desert or these uninhabited areas… you’re NOT), towed the Peugeot to his shed, explained with hands and feet - he spoke no English and my Arabic was minimal - that he couldn’t weld the (alloy) sump himself but perhaps somebody in the next village might. Many hours later he returned, we’d got the vehicle up on oil drums to get underneath it, and filled the engine with whatever oil he had for his tractor. More hours delay until somebody could be found with enough English to translate that the old boy didn’t need or want any money, but could I give him a jacket or pullover because Winter was coming and he had no warm clothes. Made it back to Damascus, the Peugeot garage changed the oil and filter but as far as the blob of “weld” over the hole was concerned, the mechanics reckoned it would probably outlive the car and left it.
So I’ve always had a soft spot for Peugeots, and who wouldn’t love a 406 Pininfarina coupé with a V6 engine? The missus had a 504 convertible but it wasn’t a “keeper”, only a XM carburettor engine and we got shot of it for a reasonable price. Peter |

saying that birdy, i am still rocking a peugeot 306 HDI, that my mam is currently using, Had it since 2007, had the car for 17 years! I have had to spend a little money on it in the last few years, Rear beam and fuel pump in the engine bay, but that's about it. The car has cost me all at all, the past years. Its only due to the age of it now things are going. But the car is 23 years old, and i am not complaining one bit at all. I think when the day comes to part with it, i will probably cry I have even discussed about mounting the front end on a wall Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I preferred the manual choke over the 'automatic choke' especially tricky if you had an automatic, rare in itself. The jacking up of the idle while on choke could be a little scary on an automatic if poorly adjusted. My series has a little light (obviously) when the choke is on. Currently it is not wired up entirely correctly as it should be wired through a little thermo switch on the engine so that the choke light lights up ONLY when the engine is warm, that little light is then extinguished by pushing in the choke. Most cars I had were not that intelligent, the light was just on as long as you pulled out the choke. Problem is the thermo switch is hard to get hold of. I have found one and need to fit it. |
