Yes there is room on the splines. The key is to make sure that the splines are clean and clear of rust and add some grease on to them to help the sliding part of the job.
It is worth soaking the locking bolts overnight in penetrating oil to help the job. You will need the LR No.1 tool to tap the UJs along the splines. ![]() |

One thing that might cheer you up is that when I looked into this part a few years ago the TD5 version was massively less expensive than the nearly-identical TDCi version, which just has an added heatshield at the top end. That heatshield, as I recall, more than doubled the price of the part.

A similar thing was observed with the fuel tank pick up, which on the 2.4 TDCi is identical to that on the TD5 except that it lacks the (presumably expensive) electric fuel pump.
Yet once again the pumpless TDCi part from those extortionate bandits at JLR was massively more expensive than the with-pump TD5 part, which led me to deduce that JLR must be paying some old codger to remove the pumps from TD5 parts to create TDCi parts, and the price hike is paying his wage. |

It didn't have that effect on me when I needed a new one!
![]() I seriously considered buying a TD5 one and removing the pump! Then I though that the poor old codger has probably been relying on that income to feed himself, and the thought of him scavenging for worms got the better of me. ![]() |

Certainly was a fair bit of play. Hopefully now the steering will be a bit more precise...Well precise as Defender steering can get. 180 miles drive later today will tell me the results! 1999 Defender TD5 110
