Smoking on cold start-up.
Hiya, I've been pointed towards this part of the forum as it seems I have a Defender 90 2007 TDCi 2.4 diesel. Had lots of 'fun' with it especially as it's on just tipped 60k miles, engine rebuild, new injectors, turbo, stater motor etc etc. I'm no mechanic, but just wondering if its common to get a lot of smoke on cold start-up, it not oil smoke that's for certain and it clears after a minute or so and runs really smoothly. Is that common/normal?

At least you now know what you've bought!

It appears to be entirely normal for the TDCi engine to smoke for a few seconds after start up, mine has done it for the last 260k miles, it is is worse in the cold weather (it can be quite embarrassing) so I think it is to do with the pre-heat and starting routine. It is a question that has cropped up several times before on the forum.

Thanks for your help, really appreciate it. Yeah I think this seems to be the case and very common, just wanted to double-check there wasn't anything else sinister it might be. To be honest, I think it's all pretty much a new engine now lol. But hey. I still love the weird and wonderful beast Smile

I had the same symptoms, albeit with a 170k engine, New glow plugs sorted it for me.

Mine would run fine but with a good amount of white smoke which cleared once things warmed up a little. All gone now.

Mine does it too. Could it be diesel that has leaked past the injector tips after turning the engine off after the last use?

The fuel rail will have a considerably pressure stored in it and the injectors needle seal will no doubt let some fuel by > 110 XS Double Cab

If it’s white smoke it’s unburnt fuel and quite common on cold start up. A high concentration diesel fuel system cleaner/flush may help. Also, get your glow plugs checked Thumbs Up Ride like you stole it!!

As said above, it could be glow plugs and there are threads on that to read through. Could also be injector seals that need replacing, my one got all smokey on start-up when the injector seals were failing. If the engine isn't leaking oil all over the place, then it'll be glow plugs or the various systems that go with glow plugs like the relay or big blue fuse thingy that lives under the driver's seat. The other 'bad starting in cold weather' threads will explain more.
