The gearbox earth strap should go from a bolt holding the PTO plate in position to the chassis. Usually one of the bolts is a double ended stud with a hex for a spanner. If it is not there then it is possible it has been left off during another owners/mechanics ministrations underneath.
The gauges on the 200tdi do suffer from bad earths so make sure all the gauge bodies are earthed properly. One marvellous experience I had with 200tdi earthing was before I knew how critical clean earths are. It was an irritating and expensive lesson. I needed to winch a friend who had gotten in to strife, hooked up turned the winch on and as soon as I began to reel him in... What's that smell. The winch had earthed through the handbrake cable, melting the plastic sheeting inside and seizing it solid. Definitely a lesson... |

Yes, winches are not to be fooled around with. But they are a useful tool.

Oh and when you find and clean up your earth points give them a good smear of something like vaseline jelly to prevent further corrosion.
