200tdi earthing

Bit of background, the past couple of trips I’ve made the electrics on the dash, fuel gauge, temp & the instrument panel dies sporadically then may come back. This also knocks out indicators & break lights, good hand signals needed

I’ve checked the battery earth, and cleaned but I’m struggling to locate the earths around the gearbox. Is it easier to access from above or below. I’ve spent a fair bit of time underneath looking for C812/3 but can’t spot it

Any help greatly appreciated for this novice

The gearbox earth strap should go from a bolt holding the PTO plate in position to the chassis. Usually one of the bolts is a double ended stud with a hex for a spanner. If it is not there then it is possible it has been left off during another owners/mechanics ministrations underneath.

The gauges on the 200tdi do suffer from bad earths so make sure all the gauge bodies are earthed properly.

One marvellous experience I had with 200tdi earthing was before I knew how critical clean earths are. It was an irritating and expensive lesson. I needed to winch a friend who had gotten in to strife, hooked up turned the winch on and as soon as I began to reel him in... What's that smell. The winch had earthed through the handbrake cable, melting the plastic sheeting inside and seizing it solid. Rolling Eyes

Definitely a lesson...

Yes, winches are not to be fooled around with. But they are a useful tool. Thumbs Up

Oh and when you find and clean up your earth points give them a good smear of something like vaseline jelly to prevent further corrosion. Thumbs Up
