TD5 2006 that won't start...

Hello all!

Looking to pick your knowledgeable brains: have a Defender td5 from 2006 that's been out of action for a while waiting for us to change the gearbox. Now that's all been sorted we're faced with a bit of a conundrum.. the beast won't start. Have recently purchased a nanocom, but can't get the ECU to communicate with it ( worked a treat on the other vehicle), the glow plug light won't come on and the fuel pump doesn't react but the starter motor turns over. Have checked all fuses and connections, and everything seems normal. Any ideas on how to move forward?

The ECU isn’t powering up. Check you’ve not left off an earth cable when reassembling after the gearbox change (easily done).

As Martin says. Plus it is worth checking the ECU compartment fuse box. 30amp fuse 3rd down is the one for the ECU IIRC.

all so the relays in there for the fuel pump and glow plugs

Do things like the lighting and wipers work?

A few specifics to try first to see if it's earth/power related:

Remove the ECU black plug, and check for resistance/continuity to battery negative post from pins 1, 2, 24, 25 (all black wires). Should all be zero or very nearly zero Ohms. If not OK - check earth eyelets in seatbox and between battery and chassis, and chassis and transfer box.

If OK, switch on ignition, and check for voltage between pin 1 and pin 33 (white with green stripe). This should be battery voltage (12-13V). If not - check fuse 12 (10A) on bulkhead fusebox.

If OK, switch off ignition. Remove main relay base from its tab (leave relay fitted to socket) and turn it upside down to access terminals. You want the relay with brown, brown/orange, blue/red and brown/light green wires.

Check for voltage between battery negative post and the brown wire, and also between battery negative post and brown/light green wires. These should all be battery voltage (12-13V).

If no voltage on brown wire, check the inertia switch (on bulkhead next to coolant bottle) is plugged in and hasn't been triggered. Press down in the middle of the top to reset.

If no voltage on both wires, check fuse 5 under the seat (30A).

If there is voltage on both wires, plug ECU back in and switch on ignition. Check for voltage between battery negative post and the brown/orange wire. Should be battery voltage (12-13V).

These are the things to try first - let us know how you get on.
